Assistant Financial & Management Accountant

In practice, you see a business once a year, through a trial balance and a set of review notes. Here, you sit in the middle of it. This newly created role partners with the people whose decisions the numbers describe, and when the numbers move, you can walk through the office and find out why.

This is a well-established, growing, community-focused organisation on Brisbane's northside, with several operating areas under one roof and a loyal base of customers who have been coming back for years. It is the kind of place where everyone knows your name by the end of the first week, and where people stay because they like it and can keep challenging themselves and growing.

The business is part of a larger, well-established group, and it has grown to the point of running its own finance function on site. The group has made sure the new seat starts in good shape. Bank feeds and automation are already running efficiently, and a group Financial Controller, who made the move from practice into commercial themselves, will help the right person develop professionally.

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager and the group's Financial Controller, this Assistant Management/Financial Accountant role is the finance function for the business. No more charge codes, no more six-minute units and no more waiting for a partner to sign off before anything happens.

The job has two halves. The first is the transactional side: payables, receivables and reconciliations. The second is the work that shapes decisions: month end, budgets, forecasts and the reports that travel from the GM's desk all the way to the board. You own the lot. In a big firm or a large finance team, it can take years to see your work reach a board. Here it happens every month. The people reading your reports run operations, not spreadsheets,

and your job is to make the numbers useful to them, one conversation at a time.

Duties & Responsibilities

Leading month end, from account reviews and adjustments, partnering with department heads

Preparing weekly reporting for each division on how it is tracking against budget, and where it can do better

Producing monthly management reports for the General Manager that feed into group and board reporting

Building budgets and forecasts, and explaining the variances when reality does not follow them

Owning the regulatory compliance reporting that comes with the business

Bookkeeping, including payables, receivables and reconciliations

Supporting and backing up payroll alongside the payroll officer

Looking after the finances of a smaller entity within the group, working with its CEO

Costing and analysing capital works and site improvements

Looking for the next process to automate, with an open mind to new tools including AI

About You

You have done a few years in a Big 4 or mid-tier firm, survived more than one busy season, and prepared financial statements for clients you have never met. You know your way around a ledger and you have the CA or CPA underway. Or you might already be in a commercial team as an assistant accountant, and you are ready for more scope and more say. What you are missing is the other side of it: owning one set of numbers end to end, and seeing what happens after the report goes out. This is where you get it.

Either way, you are happy to do some hands-on work and the budget in the same afternoon. You are comfortable making calls on your own, organised and you can talk through what you have actually done and be involved in the strategy.

Skills & Experience

You will likely bring:

Three to five years of accounting experience in a Big 4, mid-tier or business services firm, or in a commercial finance team

Experience preparing financial statements and working papers, or running reconciliations and month end

Exposure to budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis, or the appetite to build it quickly

The confidence to explain numbers to managers who do not live in spreadsheets

CA or CPA studies in progress

What's on Offer

Part of what makes this worth doing is where you would be doing it. This is a lean, close-knit team in a business that runs on relationships rather than hierarchy, and the finance seat sits in the middle of the operation rather than off to the side of it. The group promotes from within, and titles and salary grow as the person in the seat does. For a first move out of practice, it is a rare mix: real ownership from day one, with an experienced Financial Controller behind you while you find your feet.

A role you can make your own, with a transparent path towards running finance for the business in time

A competitive salary plus super, fuel, your phone bill paid and other benefits

Flexible start and finish times, whether that is an early start for school pickup or a later one, in an office-based team that works side by side, with no timesheets or busy season

Variety and exposure across the whole business, covering bookkeeping, reporting, budgets, compliance and multi-entity accounting
