Experienced Kayaker – Sydney Harbour EventThe role

Harbour Shot is seeking a highly experienced, competent and professional kayaker to provide on-water golf-ball retrieval during a commercial event on Sydney Harbour.

The kayaker will operate within an assigned area, collect balls from the water and remain in reliable communication with the event team. This role requires excellent paddling ability, sound judgement and confidence working in busy harbour conditions.

Key responsibilities

- Operate a kayak safely within the designated event and retrieval area.
- Locate and collect golf balls from the water efficiently.
- Follow directions from the event manager and designated on-water controller.
- Maintain continuous awareness of ferries, commercial vessels, recreational craft, weather, tides and changing water conditions.
- Maintain reliable radio or telephone communication with the event team.
- Remain within the approved operating area and comply with the event’s aquatic licence, operational plan and safety procedures.
- Conduct pre-start checks of the kayak, paddle, personal flotation device and communications equipment.
- Immediately report hazards, incidents or deteriorating conditions.
- Present and conduct themselves professionally as a representative of Harbour Shot.
- Stop operations if conditions become unsafe or instructions are received from the event controller or relevant authorities.

Essential experience and capabilities The successful person must:

- Have extensive kayaking experience, preferably on Sydney Harbour or comparable busy tidal waterways.
- Be highly competent in kayak handling, manoeuvring, stability and capsize recovery.
- Be physically fit and comfortable spending extended periods on the water.
- Demonstrate excellent situational awareness and conservative safety judgement.
- Be confident operating around vessel traffic, wind,



wash, currents and changing weather.
- Be punctual, dependable, calm and professional.
- Be able to follow an operational plan and respond promptly to radio instructions.
- Be a confident swimmer.
- Be available for the required briefing, event period and any scheduled contingency date.
- Have your own kayak

Highly regarded
- Qualified sea-kayaking, kayak-instruction or guiding experience.
- Paddle Australia or equivalent paddling qualifications
- Current first-aid and CPR certification.
- Experience working at aquatic events, commercial productions or organised harbour activities.
- Familiarity with Sydney Harbour navigation and local conditions.
- Experience using handheld marine radio communications.
- Ability to provide a suitable kayak and associated equipment, if required.
- Current public liability insurance and an ABN.

Safety equipment The kayaker must wear an approved, correctly fitted personal flotation device at all times while on the water. Required equipment may also include:
- Suitable and serviceable kayak and paddle.
- Spare or secured paddle, where practicable.
- Waterproof communication equipment.
- Whistle and other required signalling equipment.
- Appropriate clothing and sun protection.
- Secure ball-collection equipment that does not interfere with safe paddling.
- Any additional equipment specified in the approved event safety plan.
