Senior Associate – Family LawCentral Coast NSW | Adaptable working arrangements | Boutique family law practice
Are you an experienced family lawyer who still genuinely loves helping people?
Bilson Law is looking for an exceptional Senior Associate – Family Law to join our boutique Central Coast practice.
We are looking for more than technical excellence.
We are looking for someone who is warm, emotionally intelligent and genuinely cares about the people behind the files.
Someone our clients will adore.
Someone who can sit with a client who feels overwhelmed by separation and help them leave the appointment feeling calmer, clearer and empowered about what comes next.
And someone who finds that part of family law genuinely rewarding.
A different approach to family law
At Bilson Law, we believe excellent family law advice should do more than identify legal problems.
It should help people find a pathway forward.
Our approach is compassionate, practical and resolution-focused. We want our clients to understand their options, feel heard and have the confidence to make informed decisions about their future.
That sometimes requires creativity.
We don't want someone whose first instinct is simply, "We'll take it to Court."
We want a lawyer who can identify the legal issues, assess risk and give strong advice — while also thinking creatively about negotiation, mediation and other opportunities for resolution.
Of course, when litigation is necessary, our clients need someone with the experience and confidence to protect their interests.
But wherever possible, we want to help families resolve matters without creating unnecessary conflict along the way.
The person we're looking for
- has substantial experience practising primarily in family law;
- can confidently manage complex property and parenting matters;
- has excellent judgment and knows when a matter requires a firm approach;
- is an excellent negotiator and enjoys finding creative solutions;
- communicates legal concepts in a way clients can actually understand;
- is compassionate without losing professional objectivity;
- makes clients feel safe, respected and heard;
- is calm and measured in difficult situations;
- genuinely enjoys helping people;
- values resolution over unnecessary conflict;
- is organised, reliable and able to manage their own files;
- works collaboratively and treats colleagues, clients and other professionals with kindness and respect; and
- wants to practise family law in a way they can feel proud of.
Most importantly, we want someone who understands the wonderful moment when a client walks into an appointment feeling overwhelmed and walks out thinking:
"I can do this. I know what my options are. I know what happens next."
If helping someone reach that point gives you energy rather than draining it, you may be exactly the person we're looking for.
About the role
As our Senior Associate, you will work directly with clients across a range of family law matters, with a particular focus on providing thoughtful, strategic and resolution-focused advice.
Depending on your experience, your work may include:
- complex property settlements;
- parenting matters;
- financial disclosure and asset identification;
- businesses, companies, trusts and superannuation interests;
- negotiation and mediation;
- drafting settlement proposals and agreements;
- Consent Orders and financial agreements;
- litigation where required; and
- providing strategic advice to clients at important decision points.
This is a role for an experienced lawyer. You will have autonomy and responsibility for your matters, while still being part of a practice where collaboration and discussing strategy are encouraged.
Why Bilson Law?
We are a boutique practice,
and we want to remain personal.
Our clients aren't file numbers.
We care deeply about their experience with us and about helping them move through what can be one of the most difficult periods of their lives with greater clarity, dignity and confidence.
We also believe lawyers do their best work when they have a life outside the office.
We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with the right person and are much more interested in finding an exceptional long-term fit than fitting someone into a rigid traditional model.
You will have the prospect to work closely with the Principal and to have a meaningful voice in a practice that is genuinely interested in doing family law differently.
Bilson Law is also the home of Rise & Resolve , an initiative developed to help people experiencing separation better understand the financial separation process, access appropriate support and approach resolution from a position of greater safety, clarity and confidence.
There is genuine opportunity here for the right person to contribute to something bigger than simply managing a caseload.
What matters to us
Kindness.
To our clients.
To each other.
And even when circumstances are difficult, in the way we conduct ourselves professionally.
We can teach someone our systems.
We can introduce them to the way we work.
But we can't teach someone to genuinely care about people.
So while your experience and technical skills will get our attention, your character will ultimately matter just as much.
Experience
We anticipate that the successful applicant will have approximately 5+ years' post-admission experience in family law , although we are more interested in demonstrated capability and maturity than an arbitrary number of years.
You must hold, or be eligible to hold, an appropriate NSW practising certificate.
Remuneration will be competitive and negotiated according to experience, capability and the working arrangements agreed with the successful candidate.
