Help shape stormwater’s next chapter.
You’ve built your technical skills. You’re ready to take on more responsibility, contribute your ideas and develop the confidence to lead.
Rain Consulting is looking for a Project Engineer or Scientist with 3 to 7 years’ relevant experience to join our Melbourne team.
We’re a specialist stormwater and surface water consultancy. We plan and design better water environments, investigate how water behaves and help clients turn complex information into decisions they can act on.
Our purpose
At Rain, we exist to support, challenge and lift ourselves, each other and the people we work with.
That means helping clients understand their options and giving them the clarity and confidence to act. It also means backing our own people to develop their judgement, take ownership and contribute to how the industry works.
We value creative thinking, especially when it leads to a sound, practical solution.
How we work
Our values guide our decisions and the standards we hold ourselves to:
- Quality: We check assumptions, review our work and explain the findings clearly.
- Integrity: We give honest advice, including when a client needs to hear something difficult.
- Stewardship: We consider what our decisions mean for communities and the environment over the long term.
You’ll work with major clients, including City of Melbourne and Melbourne Water, as part of a small team where your contribution is visible.
You’ll have direct support from Luke and Rianda, Rain’s Directors, and colleagues who want to see you develop. As your capability grows, there’s room to take on greater responsibility and build your own voice in the industry.
We welcome questions,
thoughtful challenges and ideas for doing things better. You’ll be trusted to contribute, with technical review and support around you.
The role is Melbourne-based with hybrid working and flexibility, within a team that looks out for each other.
The problems you’ll help solve A council is rethinking how it manages water across its community. A wetland or waterway needs a design that supports both people and the environment. A project needs a water balance to understand where water comes from, where it goes and how it could be used.
And behind each challenge, there are people who need help turning complex information into a clear way forward.
These are the kinds of questions you’ll work through at Rain.
You’ll use TUFLOW and RORB to investigate how water behaves, test options and understand their consequences. Your projects may also involve wetland and waterway design, water balances and integrated water management. You’ll turn that work into clear maps, reports and conversations that help people make sound decisions.
You’ll also get involved beyond the technical analysis. From shaping the brief to discussing the findings with the client, you’ll develop an understanding of what makes a project helpful, achievable and worth doing. That includes managing scope,
budgets and deadlines, with support from the team.
We want you to question assumptions and contribute ideas. If you see a better way to approach a problem, explain a result or manage water, there’s room to explore it with us.
As your confidence and capability grow, you’ll have opportunities to take greater ownership, guide others and contribute to our training or facilitation work.
The aim is for your contribution to keep helping people long after the report is delivered.
What you’ll bring
- An Engineering degree, including civil or environmental engineering, or an Environmental Science degree.
- 3 to 7 years’ relevant experience in flood, stormwater or water management.
- Solid practical TUFLOW and RORB skills.
- An understanding of hydrologic, hydraulic and stormwater processes.
- The ability to plan your work, take responsibility and ask for support when you need it.
- Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical findings to different audiences.
- Curiosity about better ways of doing things and care for the quality and impact of your work.
Experience with MUSIC and QGIS is valuable. Training, facilitation or mentoring experience is a bonus.
