What you'll be doing
As the Aboriginal Peer Worker you will use lived experience as an Aboriginal person navigating your own mental health journey to support people using the mental health service.
You will build rapport and promote hope for the people you work with.
You will ensure that the care pathways are culturally appropriate and people are given the appropriate support to access other services.
There is also an aim that you will be able to contribute to building the cultural capacity of the service to work with Aboriginal people in environments and systems that are not always appropriate for Aboriginal people.
About You
Applicants must be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island descent. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification as authorised under S21 of Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
You are a proud Aboriginal person who identifies strongly with your culture, community and values, and you meet the requirements of demonstrating Aboriginality through recognised community endorsement. Your lived experience, cultural knowledge and connection to community enable you to provide meaningful support, advocacy and engagement with Aboriginal consumers accessing mental health services.
You demonstrate a strong commitment to peer support principles and are willing to undertake or have completed a Certificate IV in Peer Work – Mental Health. Drawing on your personal and cultural experiences, you provide compassionate, recovery-oriented support that empowers consumers and promotes self-determination, wellbeing and positive mental health outcomes.
You have proven ability to advocate effectively for individuals and at a broader systems level, working to improve access to culturally safe, respectful and high-quality mental health services for Aboriginal consumers.
You understand the importance of reducing barriers to care and work collaboratively with consumers, families, communities and service providers to ensure services are inclusive, culturally responsive and person-centred.
Your well-developed written and verbal communication skills enable you to build positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, while your sound computer literacy allows you to confidently use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other relevant software systems to maintain accurate documentation, correspondence and reporting requirements.
You are equally effective working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating initiative, reliability and a genuine commitment to contributing to the ongoing growth and development of MNCLHD Peer Services and the broader Peer Workforce. You actively support collaborative practice and share knowledge and experiences to strengthen peer-led service delivery.
Highly organised and self-motivated, you possess strong planning and time management skills that allow you to effectively prioritise tasks, manage competing demands and coordinate your daily workload in a professional and efficient manner.
You hold a current Australian Driver Licence and have the flexibility and willingness to travel across multiple locations as required. Your adaptability, cultural integrity and commitment to improving mental health outcomes for Aboriginal communities make you a valuable contributor to culturally safe and recovery-focused mental health services.
