As an Assistant Director Data Scientist at the Department of Education, you will lead a small team of data analysts to deliver complex bespoke data analysis, insights and statistical outputs from higher education data. Working closely with external clients, government agencies and internal stakeholders, you will translate business and data requirements into fit-for-purpose analytical products and transform large, complex datasets into meaningful insights that inform policy, program and operational decision-making. You will play a key leadership role within the team, contributing to continuous improvement, mentoring staff and supporting the department's ongoing transition to Azure Databricks and contemporary data platforms.
In this role, your responsibilities will include the following:
- Lead a small team to deliver higher education data requests and analysis.
- Engage with stakeholders to understand data requirements and provide fit-for-purpose products.
- Analyse large and complex datasets using Azure Databricks, Python and SQL.
- Manage team workflows, priorities and delivery timeframes.
- Ensure compliance with the Higher Education Support Act 2003, Higher Education Data Protocol and standard operating procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and data capability uplift initiatives.
Employment at the Department of Education is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:
- Citizenship: Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
- Security Clearance: This is a designated security assessed position. The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.
