About Us:
Originally named The Wayside Foundation, The Ted Noffs Foundation was established in 1970 by the Australian humanitarian, Reverend Ted Noffs, who’s work championed social justice, mental health support, and innovative youth services. Today, the Foundation continues his legacy, delivering frontline services and community support across NSW, ACT & QLD. With over 200 staff and 350 volunteers, we remain deeply committed to helping young people affected by issues related to drugs, crime, and mental health.
The Role:
The Casework Support Worker will work as part of the Newcastle Street University team to provide a combined intensive casework and transition-support service for vulnerable and at-risk young people aged 12–25 across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter region.
Responsibilities and duties include, but not limited to
Casework and transition support
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify each young person’s strengths, needs, goals, risks and priority support requirements.
- Develop individual casework treatment plans, goal plans and transition plans in collaboration with young people.
- Provide regular individual casework, practical assistance, advocacy, outreach and flexible follow-up support.
Outreach and engagement
- Plan, facilitate and evaluate regular outreach groups and individual sessions at Newcastle TSU and across agreed community and partner-service locations.
- Deliver supportive groups at community settings, schools, homelessness services, youth services, supported accommodation, community events and Youth Justice settings where agreed with Street University as an engagement tool for case works support.
Partnerships, records and reporting
- Build and maintain productive working relationships with Newcastle TSU staff, other Noffs services, schools, Youth Justice, and other local stakeholders.
- Establish and maintain effective referral pathways into Newcastle TSU, Noffs counselling, PALM and appropriate local services.
- Maintain accurate statistics and reports
- Attend team meetings, and participate in training
Essential Selection Criteria
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in youth work, community services, social work, or a related discipline; or equivalent relevant skills, knowledge and demonstrated experience.
- Experience and demonstrated ability to work with young people (12-25 years old) who may be reluctant to access services or who are experiencing homelessness, AOD concerns, mental-health challenges, family conflict, justice involvement, trauma or disengagement.
- Demonstrated experience providing case management, case coordination, youth work or intensive support to young people experiencing complex needs.
- Experience conducting assessments, developing case plans.
- Knowledge of the practical issues affecting vulnerable and at-risk young people.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with young people and other stakeholders.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with demonstrated organisation skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to harm minimisation, child safety, cultural safety, inclusion and the aims and values of the Ted Noffs Foundation.
- Must have a current and valid NSW Working With Children Check and Driver’s Licence (minimum Provisional licence) with a good driving record.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in youth justice, custodial settings, post-release support, homelessness, out-of-home care, AOD, mental health, family support, school engagement or related community services.
- Experience delivering group programs such as, music, DJing, beat-making, lyric writing, creative arts, digital-skills, wellbeing, life-skills or AOD education workshops.
- Knowledge of youth and community services across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter region and the Central Coast.
- Experience using client-management and outcome-reporting database.
- Current First Aid and/or Mental Health First Aid qualification.
