About The Company Our client is working on an ambitious PC and console game built around a large, stylised open world set in a fictionalised California.

The game already has a strong artistic identity, with an extensive body of concept art and animation establishing its look and feel. The challenge now is translating that vision into a real time game world that looks great, performs well and works at speed.

The game centres around a highly mobile motorbike that can jump, grapple and ride across walls, rooftops and other surfaces. This means the environment cannot simply look valuable from one angle. The whole world needs to communicate where players can go, what they can interact with and how they can move through it.

Visual references include games such as Hi Fi Rush, alongside the painterly qualities and atmosphere seen in Arcane.

The Role | What You’ll Do

As Art Director, you will take the established artistic vision and work out how to make it function as a real, playable open world.

One of your first priorities will be helping define the visual approach for the game's vertical slice. You will look at the existing concept art, prototype and technical setup, then work with the team to create a practical plan for getting the game much closer to its intended final look.

A major challenge is lighting. The game's visual direction relies heavily on warm Californian golden hour lighting, but the sun position is fixed. Moving the sun to make every street look nice is unfortunately not an option.

You will need to find creative solutions using environment composition, materials, architecture,

vegetation, terrain, colour and lighting techniques to make areas feel vibrant and readable even when they naturally fall into shadow.

You will also work closely with game design to make sure the environment supports movement. Walls, rooftops, roads and other surfaces need to clearly communicate whether they can be ridden on, reached or interacted with.

You will

- Translate established concept art into a cohesive real time open world
- Define practical art direction guidelines for environments, materials, lighting, colour and composition
- Develop solutions for the game's fixed sun position and challenging areas of shadow and contrast
- Work with technical artists to achieve the desired lighting and painterly visual style
- Collaborate closely with game design so environments support navigation and motorbike traversal
- Make sure rideable and non rideable surfaces are visually clear to players
- Guide environment artists and technical artists through clear feedback, references, paintovers and in engine reviews
- Help establish the visual plan and scope for the vertical slice
- Balance artistic ambition with performance, gameplay and production realities
- Maintain consistency across roads,

towns, landscapes, buildings and other environments
