Reporting to the Director, the EL1 Software Engineer (Full Stack Developer) will provide technical leadership within a multidisciplinary Agile delivery team supporting the delivery of critical departmental digital products and services. The role works closely with Scrum team members and Solution Management to provide expert software engineering advice, champion contemporary development practices, and contribute to the design, development and continuous improvement of secure, scalable and maintainable solutions.
Working across the full software development lifecycle, the successful candidate will lead complex development activities, support technical decision-making, drive code quality and engineering excellence, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. They will mentor team members, collaborate with stakeholders across business and technology areas, and help ensure the timely delivery of reliable and sustainable digital services.
Current positions to be filled are available on an ongoing basis. Future positions may be offered on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis for up to 12 months initially.
Responsibilities of the EL1 Software Engineer (Full Stack Developer) may include:
- Leading the design, development, enhancement and maintenance of enterprise applications and digital services.
- Developing and maintaining code of high standards, looking into maintainability, security and compliance with departmental frameworks.
- Providing technical leadership and guidance to developers within multidisciplinary Agile delivery teams.
- Participating in technical requirements analysis, solution design, estimation and architectural discussions to ensure solutions align with departmental standards and business objectives.
- Reviewing software designs, code and technical documentation to ensure quality, maintainability, security and compliance with departmental frameworks.
- Developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and DevOps practices to support effective software delivery.
- Managing complex technical issues and providing expert advice and recommendations to stakeholders and senior management.
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced developers, promoting knowledge transfer and continuous improvement practices.
- Contributing to delivery planning, risk management, technical decision-making and the adoption of emerging technologies, including appropriate and responsible use of AI-enabled development tools.
Please note, under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
This is a designated security assessed position. The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
This selection process may be used to establish a merit pool. The pool might be accessed to fill ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for similar roles in the Department over the next 18 months.
