Engineering Manager
Location: Northwest, Sydney - Hybrid (3 days in office)
Salary: Up to $200K base + super + extensive benefits The Opportunity:
One of Australia's leading InsurTech's is putting technology at the front of its next phase of growth.
The business has grown into a portfolio of well-known global brands, with close to a million policies in force and more regions on the roadmap. Most of that growth has come through its sales and service teams, with technology playing a supporting role. Now that's changing.
Two years into the shift from project-based delivery to product-led squads, the foundations are in place. The next phase is about pace and scale, with the platform moving to a decoupled, cloud-native architecture on AWS. Engineering leaders here have a real say in how that plays out.
The Role:
- You'll lead a squad with a tech lead, senior and mid-level engineers, a Product Owner and a Product Analyst. The Product Analyst handles stories and requirements, so you can stay focused on people, design and delivery.
- There's no central architecture team. Solution design sits with you and your squad, backed by principal and staff engineers and a platform engineering team building repeatable patterns you can use.
- People leadership comes first, but you'll still be hands-on: challenging engineers toward the best answer, guiding design decisions and zooming in when incidents hit.
What You'll Do:
- Build, coach and grow a high-performing engineering team
- Partner with the Product Owner to set direction and drive delivery
- Own technical direction and solution design for your domain
- Manage vendor and partner relationships
- Keep production systems healthy, reliable and well supported
- Build a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
What You Bring:
- 7+ years in software engineering, including 3+ years leading people and delivery
- A strong technical background across modern development practices and tools, ideally including .NET
- Cloud-native experience on AWS and microservices architecture
- A track record of delivering complex software projects on time and in scope
- The ability to work across cross-functional teams and make sound technical and operational calls
- Insurance or financial services background
What's on Offer:
- Hybrid working, 3 days per week in state of the art office, a short walk from the Metro line.
- On-site gym and subsidised café with weekly free lunch
- $1,200 annual travel/parking allowance
- Flexi days, wellbeing programs and in-house leadership workshops
- A certified Excellent Place to Work
Interview Process:
- Three stages, usually wrapped up in around 10 days: a 30-minute intro, a 90-minute system design conversation and a 60-minute leadership interview.
- There's no take-home task. The system design round is about how you think, not a test with one right answer.
