Our large state government client, is seeking a Trade Assistant to provide hands-on support to mechanical trades personnel in the maintenance, repair, servicing, and inspection of heavy vehicles, plant, equipment, and specialised fleet assets. Working within a workshop and field environment, the role assists with mechanical tasks, equipment preparation, workshop housekeeping, and vehicle movements while ensuring compliance with safety and operational requirements.Experience working on specialised heavy vehicles is highly desirable.
Your new role
- Assist mechanical tradespeople with servicing, maintenance, repairs, and inspections.
- Support fault-finding activities and component replacement under supervision.
- Prepare tools, equipment, materials, and work areas for maintenance activities.
- Assist with dismantling, cleaning, and reassembly of mechanical components.
- Conduct basic preventative maintenance and lubrication tasks.
- Move vehicles and equipment safely within workshop and operational areas.
- Operate forklifts for loading, unloading, and movement of parts and equipment.
- Conduct pre-start checks on vehicles, plant, and workshop equipment.
- Assist with equipment installations, modifications, and fleet preparation activities.
- Comply with all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report hazards, incidents, and equipment defects.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with maintenance procedures and manufacturer specifications
What you'll need to succeed
- Demonstrated experience working in a mechanical workshop, fleet maintenance, heavy vehicle, or industrial environment.
- Current Forklift Licence (LF).
- Current MR (Medium Rigid) Driving Licence as a minimum.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems and repair processes.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Physically capable of undertaking manual handling tasks.
- Working at Heights and Confined Space certifications.
- HR Driving Licence.
- Mechanical trade qualification (completed or partially completed apprenticeship).
- First Aid Certificate.
What you'll get in return The role is being offered on an initial temporary contract for an immediate start. You will also be offered:
- 37.5 hours – Monday to Friday
- Weekly pay structure, equivalent to level 2
- Free on-site parking
- This is an initial 6-month temporary contract, with possible extension
