Junior Field Technician – Soil Remediation Project

Helia EHS | Melbourne, VIC | Full-time

Helia EHS is an environmental consulting company based in Melbourne and Adelaide. We're looking for a motivated Junior Field Technician to join our site team on a major soil and hazardous materials remediation project in Altona.

The role

Reporting to the Fieldwork Manager, and working alongside the Helia Project Manager and Project Director, you'll support the day-to-day delivery of a complex, multi-disciplinary remediation program. This is a outstanding opportunity to build hands-on field experience on a large-scale project while living our values day to day: working as part of one cohesive environment and hazmat crew (being Inclusive), conducting yourself honestly and respectfully with clients, contractors and colleagues (working with Integrity), helping to solve the practical problems that come up in live field conditions (being Resourceful), and taking pride in accurate, high-quality fieldwork (exhibiting Excellence).

Key responsibilities:

- Collecting soil and hazardous materials samples in accordance with the project sampling program and Helia procedures

- Supporting excavation, trenching and validation works across the site

- Recording accurate field data, observations, photographs and chain of custody documentation

- Assisting the Fieldwork Manager with general site coordination, equipment management and sample dispatch to the laboratory

- Following site safety requirements and contributing to a positive safety culture on site

About you

We're looking for someone who is keen to learn, takes initiative and brings a positive attitude to site every day. You'll ideally hold a degree in environmental science, environmental engineering,

geology or a related discipline, with up to 2 years of experience in an environmental consulting or field-based role. Experience in soil or water sampling is desirable, and exposure to hazardous materials or contaminated land work would be highly regarded, though full training will be provided.

You'll be comfortable working outdoors in a range of conditions, able to follow procedures carefully, and willing to take direction while building your skills. A current driver's licence and a Construction Induction (White) Card, or willingness to obtain one, are expected.

What to expect

This is a hands-on role on a busy site. Site hours can be long, including Saturday work, reflecting the scale and pace of the project. Additional hours worked beyond ordinary hours are recognised through overtime pay or time off in lieu, in line with Helia's Overtime Policy, and rostering is managed with fatigue and rest in mind, consistent with Helia's Fatigue Management Policy. You'll receive on-the-job training and mentoring from experienced consultants, with remuneration reviewed annually.
