About the Business
Located in the historic heart of Perth, the State Buildings precinct is one of the city's favourite meeting places, home to an award-winning collection of restaurants and bars, including Beer Corner, Petition, Wine Merchant, Long Chim, Wildflower, Cape Arid Rooms and Post Osteria & Bar.
Beer Corner is a lively, approachable craft beer venue celebrating great beer, genuine hospitality and memorable guest experiences. With a rotating selection of local, national and international beers, Beer Corner offers guests the opportunity to discover something new in a relaxed but premium setting.
About the Role
Beer Corner is seeking a full-time Duty Manager to support and complement the venue management team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced hospitality professional to take greater responsibility for shift leadership, team development and the day-to-day operation of a busy beer-focused venue.
The Duty Manager will set clear expectations for each shift and ensure the venue is prepared, presented and operating efficiently. They will help develop the front-of-house team, implement established operating procedures and create a welcoming experience for every guest, from passionate beer enthusiasts to guests beginning to explore the category.
Support, mentoring and development will be provided by the State Buildings management team, with opportunities to expand your operational, beverage and leadership skills and progress your hospitality career.
Duties and Responsibilities
As Duty Manager, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee operational efficiency of Beer Corner during each shift.
- Plan and prepare shifts proactively, including staffing, service priorities, venue presentation, daily team goals, bookings and events
- Lead by example and maintain a hands-on presence, particularly during peak service periods.
- Supervising and supporting team members to deliver friendly, knowledgeable and engaging service that creates memorable guest experiences
- Implementing and maintaining Beer Corner's standard operating procedures, opening and closing requirements and service standards.
- Ensuring the venue remains clean, organised and well-presented throughout service.
- Talking team members into position at the beginning of their shift and providing clear duties, priorities and timeframes.
- Providing regular, specific and constructive feedback to support individual and team development.
- Maintaining strong product knowledge across the venue's beer, wine, cocktails, spirits and food offering.
- Help team members confidently describe beer styles and recommend products based on each guest's preferences.
- Maintain high standards of beer presentation, glassware, keg management and draught beer service.
- Supporting keg changes and assisting with the identification and resolution of draught beer or beer-line issues.
- Ensuring responsible service of alcohol requirements and all relevant venue, safety and licensing procedures are followed.
- Monitoring staffing levels and making appropriate operational decisions based on trade, guest needs and labour requirements.
- Supporting events, activations, tastings and relationships with breweries, suppliers and brand representatives.
- Assisting with ordering, stock control, stocktakes, wastage management and cost-of-goods objectives.
- Completing accurate end-of-shift reporting and providing explicit handovers for the next manager and wider team.
- Working collaboratively with Beer Corner's management team and other State Buildings departments to create a seamless guest experience.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous supervisory or management experience in hospitality.
- A strong hospitality background with busy bars, pubs, breweries or beverage-led venues.
- A genuine interest in beer and enthusiasm for continuing to develop beer knowledge.
- A practical understanding of draught beer service, including pouring, changing kegs and basic troubleshooting.
- Strong shift-management skills and the ability to plan ahead while responding calmly to changing operational needs.
- A hands-on leadership style and willingness to run food, clear tables, replenish stock and support the team wherever required.
- Exceptional guest skills and the ability to make beer approachable for guests with different levels of product knowledge.
- The ability to set clear expectations, delegate effectively and provide timely feedback.
- Strong professional communication skills and the judgement to use appropriate channels and timing for each circumstance.
- A collaborative and respectful approach to working with team members, managers and other departments.
- Attention to detail across service, cleanliness, and product presentation standards.
- Experience with ordering, stock control, stocktaking and labour management would be advantageous.
- Experience supporting events, functions or supplier activations would be advantageous.
- Confidence using point-of-sale systems and standard workplace programs such as Outlook and Excel.
- A current Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate.
- An Approved Manager qualification, or willingness to obtain one.
- Extensive specialist beer knowledge is not essential. More important is a strong hospitality foundation, curiosity about the category and a willingness to learn.
Working for the State Buildings gives you access to benefits including:
- Structured support and mentoring from experienced venue and operational leaders.
- Ongoing training in beer, beverage service, leadership and venue operations.
- Opportunities to attend tastings, product training and industry development sessions.
- Career-development opportunities across the State Buildings' collection of restaurants and bars.
- A workplace culture based on passion, creativity, professionalism and style.
- Flexible rostering and fair rotations that support a healthy work-life balance.
- Discounts across participating State Buildings venues.
- Access to the Employee Assistance Program.
- A staff recreation room with meals, couches and entertainment.
