As a Combat System Analysis Engineer within the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN)'s Maritime Warfare Centre (MWC) you will apply and develop your engineering/scientific knowledge to:

- Perform Modelling & Simulation of ship weapon systems to support exercise planning, analysis and assessment.
- Assess performance of Fleet unit combat and weapon systems during military exercises.
- Manage corporate knowledge of specialised warfare systems.
- Engage with stakeholders ranging from International Organisations, Defence Industry, Navy personnel and other business units within the Department of Defence.

Fundamentally, our team is dedicated to optimizing the Fleet’s Lethality through collection and analysis of weapon system data and feeding this to the Fleet.

We do not anticipate that you will start as a subject matter expert but we commit to supporting your develop and enhancing your skills including training on naval systems, analysis tools and techniques.

We are also dedicated to fostering your career growth and will provide training in Systems Engineering, Test & Evaluation and Leadership Development that will help you achieve your professional goals.

This role has been identified as requiring access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled technologies. The ITAR is United States (US) law that controls the manufacture, sale, use and access of defence and military end-use articles on the United States Munitions List. It is the policy of the US to deny exports of ITAR controlled technologies to proscribed countries. This may also apply to access by persons who hold or have held a citizenship, or current permanent residency, of said countries. Defence utilises workforce mechanisms to mitigate these restrictions, which will require applicants provide details of all current citizenships and permanent residencies, as well as previously held citizenships. Defence collects citizenship details to confirm an applicant’s eligibility for the role and to maintain compliance with international obligations.

About our Team

The MWC mission is to optimize and improve the warfighting effectiveness and lethality of Australia’s maritime capability. This is achieved through the delivery of highly effective warfare analysis products that support both the Fleet Commander and the Head of Navy Capability in the context of risk-based decision-making.

You will be working within the Surface Combatant Analysis team, which supports this mission through:

- Using Modelling & Simulation to verify and validate tactics.
- Post exercise reconstruction and analysis of Above Water Warfare trials.
- Liaise with ship staff to ensure optimal operation of systems and collection of data.
- Using and distributing data as the source of truth to inform decision-making.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in working for Navy and ability to apply engineering and analytical skills to identify vulnerabilities and develop improvements to Fleet warfighting performance.

You will contribute to a culture of cooperation for development and sharing of knowledge whilst exercising initiative and judgement.

Seeking candidates with experience or interest in the following areas:

- Modelling and Simulation.
- Above Water Weapon analysis.
- Combat System Performance.
- Electronic Warfare (Active, Passive and/or Support).
- Data Acquisition Systems.
- Development of analytic systems for performance evaluation (e.g. software, hardware and data processing).
- Data Science.

Noting the wide variety of areas, candidates are not expected to already have experience in any or all of these areas. However, the role can include involvement in any or all of these areas.

Security Clearance:

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 1.

Mandatory Qualifications:

A role in this engineering occupation requires a Bachelor of Engineering from an Australian institution, or a qualification gained elsewhere, that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer.
