Complex engineering. Integrated automation. An opportunity to play a critical role in delivering sophisticated automated logistics solutions across Australia and New Zealand.
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join SSI SCHAEFER's Projects Realisation team, based in either our Sydney or Melbourne office.
We are looking for an engineer who sees beyond individual components and understands how equipment, technologies and engineering disciplines come together to create a fully integrated, operational system.
Working across complex automated logistics projects, you'll play a key role in coordinating engineering interfaces, resolving technical challenges and ensuring designs are technically sound, practical and ready for execution.
Collaborating closely with project teams, engineering specialists, suppliers and other stakeholders, you'll help bring together the technical elements required to deliver reliable, high-performing automation solutions.
What you'll be doing
This is not your typical Project Engineer position. You will be working on complex warehouse automation and material handling systems, where multiple technologies, equipment and engineering disciplines must come together to deliver a fully integrated and operational solution.
Reporting to the Project Management Team Leader, you will take ownership of the technical engineering and system integration of allocated projects, from contract award through detailed engineering, installation, commissioning and handover.
You will be responsible for taking the contracted solution and developing it into a coordinated, technically compliant and executable engineering design. This involves bringing together mechanical systems, automation equipment, structural and building interfaces, electrical requirements and third-party technologies to ensure the overall system works as intended.
Working with local and international engineering teams, Project Managers, customers, suppliers and contractors, you will coordinate technical requirements, resolve engineering challenges and ensure the different elements of the system are effectively integrated.
Key responsibilities include:
Overall engineering design and technical coordination of complex warehouse automation and material handling projects.
Development and coordination of integrated system layouts incorporating conveyors, automated equipment, steelwork, building interfaces and third-party systems.
Coordination of mechanical, electrical and other engineering disciplines to ensure equipment and subsystems work together as a complete solution.
Review of technical designs, drawings and specifications to identify clashes, integration issues and potential engineering risks.
Ensuring system layouts consider operational requirements, safety regulations, maintenance access, equipment clearances and building constraints.
Preparation and coordination of engineering documentation, including layouts, bills of materials (BOMs), technical specifications and consolidated, collision-checked drawings.
Coordination of technical requirements, including compressed air supply, electrical power and equipment interfaces.
Collaboration with SSI SCHAEFER product centres, suppliers, contractors and customers to resolve technical challenges and manage engineering changes.
Provision of engineering support throughout procurement, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning, including resolution of technical issues arising on site.
Management of engineering deliverables and proactive identification of risks that may impact project scope, cost, programme or technical performance.
What you will bring:
Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical or Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline (Mandatory)
Minimum of 5 years local experience within this field or similar (Mandatory)
Experience in project engineering, systems engineering, automation engineering, mechanical systems integration or a similar technical engineering role.
Experience developing or coordinating integrated engineering layouts, equipment interfaces and technical documentation.
Exposure to automated systems, industrial equipment, manufacturing automation, material handling or related engineering environments.
Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, contractors and customers.
Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve engineering conflicts.
The ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, layouts, specifications and system requirements.
Experience with AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software.
Strong planning, coordination and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing engineering priorities.
Commercial awareness and an understanding of how engineering decisions affect project scope, cost, programme and risk.
Experience that will set you apart
We would be particularly interested in hearing from engineers with experience in one or more of the following areas:
Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS).
Conveyor and material handling systems.
Warehouse and distribution centre automation.
Robotics and industrial automation.
Mechanical equipment and systems integration.
Large-scale automated manufacturing or industrial systems.
3D modelling and design coordination using Autodesk Inventor, Navisworks or similar software.
Australian machine safety and industrial equipment standards.
Equivalent relevant industry experience supported by an appropriate technical or trade qualification may also be considered.
