Kestrel Eight

Kestrel Eight is an ICT systems integrator. We are building an enterprise delivery capability for a major Australian retail client, and we are looking for a hands-on Senior Infrastructure Automation & Edge SRE Specialist.
This is a 12-month contract starting ASAP, based in Sydney (hybrid).
In this role, you will bridge the gap between infrastructure automation, container management, data resiliency, and edge networking. You will drive end-to-end automation across remote patching, enterprise backups, and OpenShift environments across both central data centres and a distributed network of retail store/edge sites.
What You Will Do
- Infrastructure Automation at Scale: Build, maintain, and scale production-grade Ansible automation for central and edge server patching, OS deployment, automated backup routines, and store site workflows.
- Edge & OpenShift Management: Oversee and optimize Red Hat OpenShift cluster operations, including Single Node OpenShift (SNO) or distributed edge nodes across retail store environments.
- Edge Resiliency & Veeam: Automate and manage Veeam backup and recovery policies optimised for WAN/SD-WAN links, ensuring rapid recovery capability for distributed retail store nodes and central data centres.
- Edge Networking & Reliability: Navigate the operational complexities of edge network topologies (e.g., latency, limited bandwidth, intermittent connectivity, local branch firewalls) to ensure zero-downtime automation executions.
- SRE Practices: Reduce operational toil, enhance observability across edge locations (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana monitoring across distributed store nodes), and build self-healing routines to keep physical retail systems operational.
What You Must Have
- 7+ years in Enterprise Systems Engineering, DevOps, or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE).
- Edge Network & Distributed Site Expertise: Strong working knowledge of edge network topologies, WAN/SD-WAN constraints, remote site routing/firewalling, and automating workloads across bandwidth-constrained or intermittent environments.
- Deep Ansible Automation: Proven experience writing modular Ansible playbooks and roles for large-scale, multi-site infrastructure lifecycle management (patching, backups, configuration drift remediation).
- Solid OpenShift Knowledge: Hands-on experience operating, scaling, and troubleshooting Red Hat OpenShift, including edge architecture patterns (SNO, remote worker nodes, or MicroShift).
- Veeam Engineering: Deep experience with enterprise Veeam architectures, local store caching, WAN acceleration, and remote site backup/recovery orchestration.
- Australian work rights and Sydney residence.
Nice to Have
- Experience in enterprise retail or distributed branch environments (managing high-concurrency retail trade periods, edge site outages, and store network change freezes).
- Certifications: Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE / EX294), Red Hat OpenShift Administration (EX280), VMCE, or networking certifications (CCNA/CCNP).
- Scripting capabilities in Python or Bash, alongside Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform).
How to Apply Please submit your resume along with brief answers (a few lines each) to the following three questions:
- Describe an Ansible automation framework you built across distributed edge or multi-site environments, and how you handled local site network constraints.
- What is your experience deploying or operating OpenShift at the edge or in remote branch topologies?
- How have you engineered Veeam backup or recovery solutions over WAN/edge links to account for bandwidth limitations or site outages?
Pay: $850.00 – $1,200.00 per day Work Location: Hybrid remote in Sydney NSW
