Sibanye Stillwater Australia
Queenstown
Mt Lyell is an iconic asset that has helped shape Australian mining for over 120 years. Today, it’s poised at the start of its next chapter, which consists of large-scale brownfields restart project, delivering an operation that will support the growing global demand for copper as a critical energy transition metal, with significant gold and silver by-products.
Sibanye-Stillwater Australia has completed the studies necessary to support the restart of operations, consisting of underground mining, the construction of a new processing facility, a paste backfill system, shaft infrastructure refurbishment, and all the other required non-process infrastructure at Mt Lyell.
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Mining Engineer to join the Mt Lyell team and provide technical leadership across underground mine planning, design, scheduling and operational improvement as we prepare this iconic operation for its next chapter.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Mining Manager or Technical Services Manager, you’ll provide engineering expertise and technical leadership to optimise the safe, efficient and profitable operation of Mt Lyell’s underground mining activities. Working closely with operations, geology, geotechnical, ventilation, survey and processing teams, you’ll turn strategic objectives into practical mine plans and deliver solutions that support production, safety and business performance.
Mine Planning, Design & Scheduling
You’ll contribute to Life of Mine, strategic, annual budget, quarterly, monthly and weekly planning. This includes designing and optimising underground layouts, development profiles, stopes, extraction sequences, draw control strategies and ore flow plans, while developing achievable production schedules that balance operational capacity, available resources and business targets. You’ll identify opportunities to improve recovery, reduce dilution and ensure designs reflect geotechnical,
ventilation and operational constraints.
Technical Leadership
As a senior member of the team, you’ll lead mine design reviews and operational planning discussions, develop engineering standards and best practices, and provide timely technical support to operational teams. You’ll mentor Graduate, Mining and Planning Engineers, contribute to technical studies and business cases, and drive continuous improvement in safety, productivity, cost and operational discipline.
Underground Mining Expertise
Your experience in Sublevel Caving will be central to optimising cave management, extraction sequencing, draw control, fragmentation, reconciliation and drawpoint productivity, including the management of dilution, hang-ups, ground response and production constraints. You’ll also design and optimise Long-Hole Open Stoping layouts, strike lengths, slot raises and extraction sequences, and coordinate drilling, blasting, production and paste fill schedules to improve recovery, dilution and stope performance.
Ventilation, Safety & Risk
You’ll ensure mine plans incorporate current and future ventilation requirements, supporting the assessment and optimisation of airflow, contaminants, heat, dust, mobile equipment demand and key infrastructure such as primary and auxiliary fans, ventilation raises, regulators, controls and monitoring systems. You’ll demonstrate visible safety leadership, participate in risk assessments and investigations, and proactively manage technical risks relating to ground stability, cave propagation, paste fill exposure,
ventilation, blasting and production sequencing.
What You’ll Bring
You’ll hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or an equivalent qualification and have at least eight to ten years’ underground hard rock mining experience. You’ll bring demonstrated operational and technical capability in Sublevel Caving and Long-Hole Open Stoping with Paste Fill, together with strong experience in mine design, planning and production scheduling.
A sound understanding of drill and blast design, ground support, ventilation principles, paste fill operations and underground production processes is essential. You’ll also be proficient in mine planning software such as Deswik, Vulcan, Datamine, MineSched or Surpac, and bring strong analytical, commercial, leadership and problem-solving skills. A Ventilation Officer qualification, project management credentials, experience leading technical services teams, or experience in large-scale underground base metals, gold or polymetallic operations will be highly regarded.
Why Mt Lyell?
This is an opportunity to apply your technical expertise to one of Australia’s most recognised underground mining operations at a pivotal point in its history. You’ll help shape mine plans, systems and operating practices for the restart, work across a technically challenging orebody, and influence outcomes from strategic planning through to execution.
If you’re a technically strong underground mining engineer who can combine strategic thinking with practical operational delivery, we want to hear from you. Bring your expertise to Mt Lyell and help shape what comes next.
