Why this role exists

Scartan Pty Ltd is building a shortlist of Senior Project Managers with underground mining experience for a fly-in fly-out placement with an established gold and copper producer with underground operations in Australia, expected to start in early 2027. We will present a small number of candidates to the client, who will choose the person they want embedded in their project team. You will be the senior Scartan person on site, carrying the client's confidence personally and representing the owner's interest.

About Scartan

Scartan is an independent, principal-led project management, controls and advisory consultancy with offices in Brisbane and Auckland. We represent asset owners on complex, regulated, high-consequence programs in mining, water and infrastructure, including marine and EV ferry infrastructure.

About the role

You will be embedded with the client as a senior owner-side project manager on their underground capital program, leading delivery, controls and governance on their behalf while remaining part of the Scartan team. The placement is FIFO.

What you'll do

- Own end-to-end delivery of assigned underground projects or work packages on the client's behalf, from study and procurement through construction, commissioning and handover to operations
- Run the project controls: cost, schedule, risk, change and reporting, with dashboards and reports the site leadership and steering committee can act on
- Administer contracts and manage contractors, consultants and operational interfaces with commercial discipline and documented decisions
- Lead interfaces with site operations and functional teams so project work lands around a live underground operation
- Protect the client's interest with independent challenge: see issues early, put defensible options in front of decision-makers, and say the hard thing when it needs saying
- Grow the Scartan relationship on site,



so the engagement is extended and the client calls us first for the next engagement
- Contribute to Scartan's methodology, templates and lessons learned, and support bids and proposals in the mining sector

Success measures

Performance is assessed against the client's outcomes on the scope you hold:
- Client confidence: the client's project director confirms at each review that the role is meeting expectations, and the engagement is extended on its planned date
- Reporting: monthly cost, schedule and risk reports issued on time, accepted by the client's governance without rework, and forecasts that hold within agreed tolerances
- Commercial discipline: variations, claims and extensions of time assessed and closed within contract timeframes, with every decision documented and traceable
- Safety: full compliance with the site's safety management system, and no recordable incidents on work under your direction
- Delivery: scope gates (study, award, construction, commissioning, handover) reached on the approved baseline, or re-baselined with the client's informed agreement

What we're looking for

Required

- 10+ years in project management on mining or heavy-industrial projects, with at least 5 years delivering capital projects at an operating underground mine
- Has managed an underground project or portfolio of A$20M+ through at least one full phase (study, procurement, execution or commissioning)
- Has administered at least one major construction or services contract (AS 4000 family, NEC or equivalent) including variations, claims and extensions of time
- Experience producing cost, schedule and risk reporting to a site leadership team, steering committee or board
- A tertiary qualification in mining or civil engineering, construction, project management or a related field, or demonstrated equivalent experience
- Full, unrestricted rights to work in Australia for the term of the engagement (citizen, permanent resident or a visa with no work limitations); visa sponsorship is not available for this role. Able to work a FIFO roster and meet the site's underground inductions, medical and fitness-for-work requirements

Preferred

- Experience on gold or copper-gold underground operations, across more than one mining method, and with underground infrastructure such as declines, shafts, ventilation, dewatering or crushing and conveying




- Experience working in a client's team as a consultant or secondee rather than as a direct employee
- RPEQ, PMP, CPPM or equivalent registration
- Familiarity with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project

Health, safety and conditions of engagement

Safety is a condition of the role, not a section of it. You are expected to:

- Comply with the client's safety and health management system, site rules and statutory obligations under Queensland mining safety legislation, and hold the client's standards on work under your direction
- Meet the site's fitness-for-work requirements, including drug and alcohol testing, fatigue management and the FIFO roster's rest obligations
- Report hazards, incidents and near misses immediately through the site system and to Scartan, and support investigations openly
- Complete and keep current the site's underground inductions and competencies, and stop work where it is unsafe to continue

Any offer is conditional on: a satisfactory national police check; evidence of full, unrestricted work rights in Australia; verification of qualifications, registrations and referees; and a pre-employment medical, drug and alcohol screen and underground inductions, which the client arranges as part of site onboarding.
