Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council provides essential services and supports the wellbeing and development of the Kowanyama community in Far North Queensland.

Located on the western Cape York Peninsula, Kowanyama offers a unique opportunity to experience life in a remote Aboriginal community while making a meaningful contribution to the delivery of important local services.

About the Role
We are seeking a capable, experienced and community-minded Post Office Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Kowanyama Post Office.

This is a hands-on position requiring someone who understands Australia Post systems and procedures, can independently oversee the smooth running of a busy community service and bring excellent customer service to the community.

The Post Office provides a range of essential services, including postal and parcel processing, banking transactions, power card sales and ATM facilities. Accuracy, accountability and excellent customer service are fundamental to the role.

Reporting to the Executive Manager Community Services and Cultural Heritage, you will be supported by a local part-time employee who assists with mail processing. You will take ownership of the broader operational, financial and customer service responsibilities.

This opportunity will suit someone who has previously managed or worked in a remote community Post Office and understands the importance of building positive relationships, maintaining accurate records and delivering reliable services.

Your Responsibilities

- Manage the daily operations of the Post Office, ensuring efficient,



reliable and customer-focused services.
- Process postal, banking, power card, money order and general retail transactions.
- Oversee cash handling, ATM operations, balancing and regular financial reconciliations.
- Prepare accurate daily, weekly and monthly reports, including remittances and financial information for Australia Post and Council.
- Manage stock ordering, inventory control and reconciliation processes.
- Ensure compliance with Australia Post policies, security requirements, Council procedures and workplace health and safety standards.
- Maintain accurate operational records and update procedures and documentation as required.
- Support and guide the part-time employee, ensuring mail and parcel processing is completed effectively.
- Resolve customer enquiries and complaints professionally, particularly when dealing with sensitive financial matters.
- Identify opportunities to improve service delivery and operational efficiency.

Skills and Experience Required
To succeed in this position, you will bring proven experience within Australia Post operations, robust financial administration skills and the confidence to manage a Post Office with a high degree of independence.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

- Previous Australia Post experience, with a robust working knowledge of postal systems, transactions, procedures and reporting requirements.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills, including the ability to manage challenging situations calmly and respectfully.




- Experience working in a remote Aboriginal community, with an understanding of the cultural awareness, adaptability and resilience is highly favourable.
- Experience managing or independently operating a Post Office or similar Australia Post service.
- Strong cash handling, banking, ATM reconciliation and financial reporting capabilities.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, alongside Australia Post operational systems.
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to take ownership of daily operations.

A current manual driver's license and National Police Clearance are required.
