Senior National Industrial Officer
Are you an experienced industrial relations practitioner with a strong track record in industrial advocacy and strategic industrial leadership?
Do you want to play a leading role in shaping national industrial outcomes for health and community services workers?
If so – an exciting opportunity is available at the Health Services Union's national office for a full-time Senior National Industrial Officer.
Organisational Context
The Health Services Union (HSU) is one of Australia's fastest growing unions, with over 120,000 members.
Our members are at the forefront of nation-changing reforms across aged care, disability services, and the public, private, and mental health systems.
The HSU is comprised of eight branches, and the role of HSU National is to coordinate and support the union's national industrial and strategic priorities.
Through national campaigns, industrial advocacy, and policy development, we work to strengthen the collective power of HSU members and ensure they have a strong voice in the debates that shape their working lives and communities.
The Role
The Senior National Industrial Officer is a senior leadership position with HSU National, responsible for driving the union's national industrial strategy and providing high-level industrial and legal advice to union leadership across the country.
Reporting directly to the HSU National Secretary and working as part of a small, high-performing team, the successful applicant will assume responsibility for the HSU's national modern award matters, including major proceedings before the Fair Work Commission concerning wages, classification structures, and gender-based undervaluation.
The role also includes coordination of strategic industrial campaigns, and engagement with key stakeholders including other unions and peak bodies, employers, employer associations,



advocacy organisations, and government representatives and regulators.
The Senior National Industrial Officer will also provide strategic support to HSU branches nationally, facilitate cross-branch industrial coordination, and contribute to the development and mentoring of industrial staff.

Key Selection Criteria
Essential
Demonstrated experience providing high-level industrial, legal, or strategic advice in a union, employer organisation, law firm, government agency, or similar environment.
Highly developed strategic, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead complex industrial matters and identify opportunities to advance organisational objectives.
Extensive knowledge of the federal industrial relations system, including the Fair Work Act, modern awards, and Fair Work Commission processes.
Demonstrated experience leading or playing a key role in significant industrial relations matters, including advocacy, case preparation, witness management, and the development of case strategy.
Exceptional written and verbal communication and stakeholder management skills, with the capacity to influence and build effective relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic industrial campaigns and projects.
Experience managing, supervising, or mentoring staff.
Ability to work autonomously,



exercise sound judgement, and manage competing priorities.
Demonstrated commitment to the values of the union movement, social justice, equity, and collective action.
Desirable
Experience in modern award reviews, work value proceedings, or other significant test cases.
Experience in industrial policy development or legislative reform advocacy.
Experience working within a trade union environment.
Tertiary qualifications in law, industrial relations, economics, or a related discipline.
Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and a current practising certificate.
Other requirements
Ability to acquire a National Police Check.
Ability and willingness to undertake occasional interstate travel and reasonable out-of-hours work as required.

This is a full-time position.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the HSU National Employee Agreement and will receive:
A competitive salary commensurate with qualification, skills and experience.
5 weeks annual leave.
Monthly rostered day off.
12.5% superannuation.
Versatile working arrangements, including one work-from-home day per week.
The preferred location for this role is HSU National's office in Carlton, Victoria; however, alternative arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.
