About Deep Lead Property
Deep Lead Property Pty Ltd manages native vegetation conservation and biodiversity offset sites, including State and Commonwealth environmental offset obligations, across a number of locations in Victoria.
Our work combines practical land management, ecological monitoring, contractor coordination, data collection for compliance reporting and long-term stewardship of conservation sites.
Primary Purpose of the Position
The Conservation Field Officer / Crew Supervisor will provide practical field and project support to the Deep Lead Property team, with a particular focus on assisting the Project Manager with day-to-day delivery of Offset Management Plan (OMP) obligations and other conservation works.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable working independently, working as part of a small field crew, or taking the lead on straightforward site activities.
The position combines on-ground conservation work with site inspections, data collection, contractor and crew coordination, and a modest amount of administration.
Reporting Relationships
The position will work closely with the Project Manager and Directors of Deep Lead Property.
The role may also coordinate casual field staff and contractors on individual jobs and will be expected to communicate clearly with land managers, ecological consultants and other project participants where required.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake weed control and vegetation management, including herbicide application using backpack and other approved spraying equipment.
Accurately identify priority weed species and distinguish weeds from native vegetation in a range of Victorian grassland, woodland and natural environments.
Carry out routine site inspections and practical OMP management activities across Deep Lead Property conservation and offset sites.
Work independently in the field and, when required, lead or supervise small crews of approximately 1–3 people.
Assist with organising and directing casual staff and contractors for weed control, fencing, spraying, maintenance and other land-management tasks.
Assist with practical property and site-management tasks, including moving or managing livestock where required for conservation outcomes.
Collect field data using GPS units, mobile applications and other digital tools, including locations, photos, treatment records and monitoring information.
Maintain clear, accurate field notes and records to support OMP, EPBC Act and other State or Commonwealth reporting requirements.
Assist with site monitoring, photo points, condition observations and other routine ecological or land-management data collection under direction.
Support preparation of simple field summaries, contractor records, work schedules and other project administration.
Inspect and maintain field equipment, spraying gear and vehicles, and ensure chemicals and equipment are handled safely.
Communicate promptly with the Project Manager about site conditions, emerging risks, access issues, contractor performance and work completed.
Undertake occasional travel to regional sites, including overnight stays when required.
Work Environment and Flexibility
The role is expected to average around ***** hours per week, but hours may vary significantly from month to month.
Some of the work is weather-dependent; for example, spraying may be postponed during rain, strong winds or unsuitable conditions.
Where practical, field work may be balanced with data entry, planning or administrative tasks.
Deep Lead Property is seeking someone who values flexibility and can respond sensibly to seasonal priorities rather than expecting a rigid weekly field schedule.
Essential Skills and Requirements
Current Agricultural Chemical Users Permit (ACUP) and demonstrated competence in the safe handling and application of herbicides.
Strong weed identification skills and practical knowledge of weed-control methods.
Relevant practical experience in conservation land management, bush regeneration, natural resource management, ecological contracting, agriculture or a related field.
Ability to work independently, plan a field day, solve practical problems and complete tasks without close supervision.
Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and confidence to lead or supervise a small crew when required.
Good field judgement, reliability and a strong safety mindset.
Competence using GPS units, smartphones/tablets and field data-collection apps, or the ability to learn these quickly.
Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to maintain accurate work and field records.
Current Victorian driver's licence and capacity to travel to sites across Victoria.
A manual vehicle will be used.
Physically capable of undertaking outdoor field work, including walking over uneven ground, lifting heavy equipment, carrying a backpack sprayer and working in variable weather conditions.
Desirable Skills and Experience
Certificate or Diploma in Natural Resource Management, Conservation and Ecosystem Management, Environmental Science, Ecology, Agriculture or a related discipline.
Experience working on conservation sites or implementing Conservation Management Plans.
Experience supervising field crews or coordinating contractors.
Construction Industry White Card.
Chainsaw, or other small-plant experience and relevant licences or competencies.
Experience with fencing, livestock management, ecological monitoring, photo-point monitoring or basic survey work.
Personal Attributes
Practical, self‐motivated and willing to take ownership of straightforward tasks.
Calm and adaptable when weather, contractors or site conditions change.
Comfortable working alone in regional locations as well as collaboratively with the broader team.
Observant and detail‐oriented, particularly in relation to weed identification, site condition and record keeping.
Skilled and respectful when dealing with contractors, consultants, landholders and project stakeholders.
What We Offer
Flexible part‐time / casual work arrangements averaging approximately ***** hours per week.
A varied role combining practical conservation work, field coordination and project support.
A high degree of autonomy for the right person, with direct access to the Project Manager and company Directors.
Work across a portfolio of native vegetation conservation and biodiversity offset sites around Victoria.
An opportunity to develop broader skills in offset management, ecological monitoring, compliance and long-term conservation land management.
Location
The preferred candidate will be based in Geelong or nearby, providing practical access to Deep Lead Property's western and regional Victorian sites.
Employment Terms
Employment status, hourly rate and final work pattern will be agreed with the successful candidate.
The role may be structured as part-time or casual employment depending on the candidate and the operational needs of Deep Lead Property.
