Position Title: Social Media & Content Officer

Area: External Relations – Communications

Supervisor: External Relations Manager

Positions directly reporting to this role: None

Hours: This is a casual position. Hours will vary according to NYSF’s operational requirements. The role is expected to have periods of higher activity associated with NYSF program, events and communications campaigns, as well as periods where limited or no work may be available.

Salary: $38.65 per hour, plus superannuation as required by law

Location: NYSF Office, 56 Mills Road, The Australian National University, Canberra. Interstate travel is likely to be required to support NYSF programs and events, especially during January and school holiday periods.

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a national not-for-profit (NFP) charity that has operated for over 40 years. As one of Australia’s most well-known STEM outreach organisations, the NYSF inspires students to pursue a range of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) study and career options. We currently have 11 full-time team members and engage casual staff where required. The NYSF comprises of four teams: Programs & Events, External Relations, Operational Services, and the Executive Team. The NYSF team is led by CEO Dr Melanie Bagg and supported by a highly regarded Board.

About the Role

The Social Media & Content Officer will support the delivery of NYSF’s digital communications, with a particular focus on social media content creation, publishing and community management.

Working closely with the Communications Lead, the role will help ensure NYSF maintains an active, engaging and responsive presence across its social media channels. It will provide additional hands-on capacity for producing content, monitoring channels and engaging with our online communities.

The role will suit someone who is creative,



digitally confident and comfortable working with a fast-moving content calendar and a youth-focused brand.

Duties will include:

- Prepare and produce engaging social media content in line with NYSF’s brand and communications priorities set by the Communications Lead.
- Create platform-appropriate written and visual content, including posts, graphics, short-form video/reels and stories.
- Schedule and publish approved content across NYSF social media channels.
- Monitor social media channels and prepare responses to routine comments, messages and community interactions, escalating matters to the Communications Lead were appropriate.
- Identify and suggest opportunities for timely, relevant and engaging social content.
- Support content capture and production for NYSF programs, events and activities where required, with guidance from the Communications Lead
- Assist with maintaining the social media content calendar and coordinating upcoming content with the Communications Lead.
- Monitor social media performance and prepare simple regular reporting on reach, engagement and other key metrics.
- Support other digital content and communications activities as directed by the Communications Lead.

Eligibility Criteria

- Some experience creating content for social media, either professionally or through demonstrated practical experience such as study, volunteering, community involvement or personal projects.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to create clear and engaging content and adapt tone and style for different audiences and social media platforms.
- Experience creating visual and/or short-form video content using tools such as Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Suite or native social media tools, or demonstrated ability and willingness to develop these skills.
- A good understanding of social media platforms, particularly Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, including how content and audience engagement differ across platforms.
- Good organisational and time management skills,



with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work with a changing content calendar.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively, take direction and feedback, and contribute ideas as part of a team.
- Sound judgement and an understanding of appropriate online engagement, including knowing when matters should be escalated.
- Attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, high-quality content consistent with organisational branding and communications priorities.
- Flexibility to work varying hours according to NYSF's operational requirements, including periods of increased activity associated with programs, events and communications campaigns.
- Willingness and ability to attend NYSF programs and events, including occasional interstate travel and work outside standard business hours, where required.
- A current Working with Vulnerable People registration, or the ability to obtain registration prior to commencing in the position.
- Experience creating social media content for an organisation, business, community group or NFP organisation.
- Experience with photography, videography and/or editing short-form video content.
- Experience using social media scheduling, publishing or analytics tools.
- Experience in monitoring social media performance and interpreting basic engagement and audience metrics.
- An interest in STEM, education, young people and/or purpose-driven organisations.
- Experience working or volunteering in an NFP, education, youth or community environment.

Requirements

In line with NYSF Policies and Procedures, the Social Media & Content Office will have in place, or the ability to obtain:

- An ACT Working with Children Check (WWCC) and QLD Blue Card
- Current First Aid training, including CPR
- A National Police Check (NYSF will facilitate and cover the cost of this check).
