The Fifth Design PTY

Nambour

The Fifth Design is a small artisan homewares studio in Nambour on the Sunshine Coast. We make resin and Camphor Laurel timber cheeseboards and serving boards, and every board comes out different because the resin never pours the same way twice. Our pieces go to people marking something, a wedding, a current home, a last Christmas with someone.

We are looking for one careful, observant person to take over making our boards from a team member who is moving on. You would be trained by her directly over your first few weeks, so you are not learning this alone from a manual.

What the work actually is

You will learn our existing resin board designs and then make them, again and again, to the same standard. This role makes our boards only. You are not designing new pieces. You are learning the recipe and holding it. The craft is in the consistency.

Each batch behaves slightly differently. Temperature, timing, how the colour moves. The part we cannot teach is noticing: seeing that a pour is not sitting right, working out why, and deciding what to do about it before it cures. If you like understanding why something worked, this role will suit you. If you want to be told exactly what to do and never think past it, it will not.

You also need an eye. Every board is unique, so there is no template telling you when one is finished and beautiful. You need to be able to look at a board and judge it honestly, including when it is your own work.

Hours

Two shifts a week, roughly 8 to 12 hours, at times we agree together and keep consistent.

From mid November to Christmas we get very busy and the hours climb, up to full-time weeks of 30 to 38 hours through December. Flexibility to step up over that period genuinely matters to us, and we will give you the dates well in advance.

The conditions, honestly

This is a full PPE role. Respirator, gloves, eye protection, covered clothing, every pour. The gear is provided, it is not optional, and you need to be comfortable working in a mask for a few hours at a time.

You will also be working largely on your own while you are pouring. You cannot hold a conversation through a respirator over extractor noise, so this is a role for someone who is genuinely content in their own company with music or a podcast on.

What we are looking for

Attention to detail, and the patience to redo something rather than let it through.

The ability to follow a clear process exactly, and the judgement to know when a batch has gone off-script.

A good memory. A lot of this is remembering what you did last time and what it produced.

Comfort working alone, in PPE, for a full shift.

Reliability. Shifts you have agreed to, turned up for.

Someone looking for a long-term role, not a few months.

What it is like here

The studio is quiet and calm. Small team, no drama, music on, work that you can see the result of. Our team have been with us a long time and we would like to keep it that way.

Growing the role

There is a path to a Production Lead rate at six months for someone who takes on quality and supplier ownership. It is not expected of you on day one.
