Our client is a well-established and highly regarded not-for-profit organisation located in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Providing a broad range of community-based services, the organisation plays an key role in supporting the health and wellbeing of people across the local community.

An opportunity has now arisen for an experienced Payroll Officer to join the team on a 12-month fixed-term contract, working approximately 22–23 hours across three days per week.
The preferred working days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, although there may be some flexibility. The organisation also offers an excellent hybrid model, with typically one day per week in the office and two days working from home.
The Position
Reporting into the finance function, you will take ownership of the organisation’s fortnightly end-to-end payroll for approximately 250 employees.
This is a hands-on and varied payroll position requiring someone comfortable working autonomously and managing the complete payroll cycle. The payroll operates across multiple awards and enterprise agreements, providing a level of complexity that will suit an experienced payroll professional.
Key responsibilities will include:
- End-to-end processing of a fortnightly payroll for approximately 250 employees
- Managing payroll across multiple awards and enterprise agreements
- Processing new starters, employee changes and terminations
- Calculating back pay, adjustments and other payroll-related payments
- Managing superannuation processing and associated reconciliations
- Administration of portable long service leave requirements
- WorkCover-related payroll administration
- Processing changes to employment contracts, hours, salaries and conditions
- Managing leave entitlements and payroll-related employee records
- Responding to employee payroll queries in a timely and professional manner
- Completing payroll reconciliations and ensuring payroll data is accurate
- Maintaining accurate employee and payroll records
- Supporting reporting, compliance and year-end payroll requirements
- Providing occasional support across accounts payable and accounts receivable when required

The Candidate Profile
This position will suit an experienced Payroll Officer who genuinely enjoys taking ownership of the payroll process from beginning to end.
You will ideally have previously managed a payroll of at least 100 employees, with experience overseeing the full payroll cycle rather than working solely within one component of a larger payroll function.
You will also ideally possess:
- Strong end-to-end payroll experience
- Experience managing payroll independently or with a high level of autonomy
- Exposure to multiple awards and/or enterprise agreements
- Valuable knowledge of payroll legislation, superannuation and employee entitlements
- Experience processing starters, terminations, back payments and payroll adjustments
- Intermediate Excel skills including VLOOKUPs, PivotTables and conditional formatting
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work accurately to payroll deadlines
- Excellent communication skills and confidence responding to employee payroll queries
- A personable, empathetic and approachable style
- The ability to work self-sufficiently while also contributing positively to a broader finance team
Previous experience within the not-for-profit, community services or healthcare sectors would be advantageous, although it is not essential.
Importantly, this opportunity is specifically suited to someone actively seeking part-time employment and wanting to work approximately three days per week on an ongoing basis.
