About the role

VMIA is the Victorian Government’s insurer and risk adviser, covering the people, places and projects that help Victorians thrive.

As our Data Platform Engineer, you’ll help build and maintain the infrastructure that supports VMIA’s data and digital initiatives. You’ll write clean, maintainable code, develop clear documentation and support the deployment of secure, reliable data infrastructure.

Working within the Data and Analytics team in the Business Performance Division, you’ll gain hands‑on experience in software engineering, data governance and enterprise data platforms, with guidance from experienced data professionals.

Key responsibilities

- Help build and maintain Snowflake databases, schemas, warehouses, tables and stored procedures using Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Pulumi or Terraform.
- Write Python and SQL to support deployment scripts, stored procedures and data ingestion pipelines.
- Assist with consistent, repeatable deployments across development, test and production environments.
- Contribute to platform configurations using YAML and JSON.
- Implement and maintain role‑based access controls, including role hierarchies, permissions and access policies, under senior guidance.
- Support infrastructure configuration to improve platform scalability, security and cost control.
- Write and maintain automated tests and help support and troubleshoot continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

- Use Git and GitHub to contribute through branching, code reviews and pull requests.
- Maintain clear documentation, identify and elevate risks or issues, and follow relevant policies and controls.

What we are looking for

You’re curious about how systems work and keen to build your career in data platform engineering. You bring an analytical approach, attention to detail and a willingness to learn.

You’ll have:

- Exposure to relational databases and SQL through study, projects, internships or personal learning.
- Exposure to Python, including data structures, scripting and structured data formats such as JSON and YAML.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, with the ability to break down unclear or complex problems into manageable questions.
- Strong written communication skills, particularly when documenting technical work.
- Practical experience through internships, projects or work in software engineering, software development, data engineering or data modelling.
- Familiarity with software engineering practices such as automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD.
- Familiarity with version control tools such as Git, and collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- An understanding of APIs and common data formats, including JSON, CSV and XML.
- A collaborative approach, openness to feedback and commitment to continuous improvement.

At VMIA, we believe diversity drives innovation. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives.
