The Company
Plenty of organisations say finance is a strategic partner. Far fewer have redesigned the finance function so that it can be one.
Our client is a large, long-established Queensland not-for-profit. It is values-led and has served the community for generations across several operating divisions. Its largest division has recently been brought together under a single leadership team. Rather than adding another layer of reporting, the organisation has decided that a division of that size and complexity deserves a finance professional of its own, someone who sits beside the operators rather than a desk away from them.
The finance function is well structured and grown-up about how it works. Reporting and compliance has its own team, FP&A; has its own team, and the lines between them are transparent. That means this seat is about insight, not processing. If you want your commercial judgement to shape how services are actually delivered, the Finance Business Partner seat is where it starts.
The Role
Reporting to the FP&A; Manager, the Finance Business Partner is the main finance partner for the organisation's largest division. That division runs several service streams across multiple sites. You will work closely with the divisional executive and the managers running services on the ground.
Here is the part most business partner ads leave out. In a lot of organisations the title is generous, and the job turns out to be month end with a few extra meetings. This one has been deliberately designed the other way round. Statutory and regulatory preparation sits with a separate team, so your time goes into forecasting, performance, business cases and the conversations that change decisions. You will still understand the reporting obligations well, because operators will look to you to explain what the numbers mean and what to do about them.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Partnering with divisional leadership as their first point of contact for finance, and building trust across every service stream
- Delivering monthly performance and KPI reporting with commentary that leads to action, not just explanation
- Owning the annual budget and rolling forecasts for the division in Workday Adaptive Planning
- Presenting budget against actual results to operational managers, with clear reasons and recommended next steps
- Using external benchmarking data to find performance gaps, emerging risks and improvement opportunities
- Building and testing business cases for investment, service model changes and strategic initiatives
- Modelling service performance, including volumes, pricing, margins, utilisation and site-level results
- Giving divisional insight and operational context to support regulatory and annual reporting
- Working with operations and the reporting team to resolve data quality issues that affect forecasting and decision making
- Visiting sites regularly to stay close to the operations you support
About You
You are the kind of Finance Business Partner who would rather be in the room when the decision is made than be sent the minutes afterwards. You can take a page of variances and turn it into three sentences an operations manager will actually act on. You enjoy the people side of finance as much as the numbers,
and you are comfortable telling a site manager something they would rather not hear, in a way that keeps the relationship intact.
You may already be in the not-for-profit or government-funded space and want a seat with more influence. Or you may be a commercially minded finance partner from a multi-site business who wants your work to mean something beyond the bottom line. Either way, you are genuinely curious about how funding, workforce and service delivery connect. You also feel at home in an organisation whose values are part of how it operates, not a poster in the foyer.
Skills & Experience
To be effective in this Finance Business Partner role, you will likely bring:
- A CA or CPA qualification or working towards
- Experience in management accounting, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting
- A proven track record of partnering with operational leaders and influencing through clear, commercial insight
- Confident communication, written and verbal, including presenting to executive stakeholders
- Strong Excel skills, with Workday Adaptive Planning experience (or the appetite to learn it)
What's on Offer
- A business partner role that really is one, with statutory and regulatory preparation sitting with a dedicated team so your focus stays on insight and influence
- A hand in shaping how a major division responds to a significant funding reform
- Direct access to the divisional executive and the people running services every day
- A supportive FP&A; Manager invested in building business partner capability across the team
- Purposeful work, where better financial decisions lead directly to better outcomes for the community
- Not-for-profit salary packaging and a competitive package aligned to your experience
