HOTA, Home of the Arts Precinct
This role will be based at HOTA, Home of the Arts. HOTA is an iconic Gold Coast destination where art, entertainment, culture and lifestyle meet. A place that locals love and visitors must-see. HOTA offers a diverse suite of venues and facilities, including a gallery, outdoor stage, indoor theatres and cinemas, function and events rooms, as well as a range of food and beverage venues including the HOTA Café, the rooftop Exhibitionist Bar and three hat Palette Restaurant.
At the heart of HOTA’s identity is a rich and diverse program: live music, theatre, dance, comedy, film, visual art exhibitions, children’s shows, community workshops, and festivals - all taking place across the array of venues.
About the Role
As Senior Staging Technician, you’ll play a key role in delivering complex productions, touring shows, performances and events across HOTA’s venues. Reporting to the Head of Staging, you’ll provide hands‑on technical expertise across staging, rigging and stage machinery, troubleshoot complex faults and help ensure safe, reliable show operations.
You’ll also lead and mentor technicians and casual crew, coordinate staging activities and contribute to maintaining high standards of safety, technical excellence and operational readiness across the precinct.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver complex staging operations, including scenic changes, counterweight flying, stage machinery and rigging activities within your licence and authorisation.
- Interpret technical plans, verify loads and lifting arrangements, and ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with approved requirements.
- Diagnose technical faults, coordinate equipment recovery and identify when specialist or engineering support is required.
- Lead, mentor and support technicians and casual crew, providing clear direction, practical training and performance feedback.
- Coordinate staging activities, crew requirements and operational priorities in collaboration with Technical Services and Production teams.
- Maintain accurate stage plots, cue sheets, load records, inspection findings and operational handovers.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance practices, procedures and technical training.
- Champion workplace health and safety and maintain high standards across all staging operations.
What We're Looking For
- Extensive staging experience in theatre, touring productions or live entertainment.
- Advanced knowledge of staging systems, counterweight flying, stage machinery and scenic changes.
- Ability to interpret technical plans, verify loads and direct rigging within licence and design limits.
- Strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience leading crews,
mentoring technicians and delivering practical training.
- Sound knowledge of WHS requirements for rigging, lifting and stage machinery.
- Relevant technical production qualification or equivalent professional experience.
- Strong communication, organisation and decision‑making skills, including under pressure.
- Current RI (or higher), LF and WP (11m+ boom) high risk work licences.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Current driver’s licence for assigned vehicles.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Blue Card, if required.
- Advanced Rigging (RA) high risk work licence.
- Manufacturer training in stage machinery.
