Assistant Manager - Mixed Livestock & Cropping | Tasmania
- Family-owned sheep, beef, and cropping farm
- Small cohesive team
- Cutting-edge management team
The Role
Working in beautiful Tasmania, this hands-on position directly supports the Owner/Managers while focusing predominantly on livestock operations. In this role, you will oversee animal husbandry, guide grazing rotation decisions, implement production plans, handle farm and machinery maintenance, and ensure daily operations move forward autonomously according to plan. Additionally, you may provide operational support for cropping activities during peak seasonal periods.
While external contractors handle most new infrastructure builds, this role will require you to be highly competent in fencing and general farm maintenance. All mustering is conducted on bikes or side‑by‑side with dogs.
The Employer
Your prospective employers are an energetic well-established family owned farming business who are enthusiastic about the future of their enterprise, using AgriWebb as an essential operational tool and actively adopting new technology, industry innovations, and recommended best practices.
Operations currently span 5,000 hectares carrying dual-purpose merino ewes as the focus of the operation, and cattle, with clear plans to expand breeding capacity in the coming years. Working dogs are recognised and valued as an integral part of the team, and while 300 hectares are utilised for dryland, irrigated, and fodder cropping, this will remain secondary to the livestock focus of this role.
The Offer
A highly attractive salary package is available for negotiation, depending on the successful candidate's existing skills. A 3-bedroom cottage on the farm, with gas and power utilities, will also be provided, along with a work vehicle.
Conveniently located within an hour of Hobart and close to several other regional centres, such as New Norfolk, you will have access to all amenities, including schools and medical services.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a motivated and proactive professional who can autonomously execute agreed production plans without constant supervision, demonstrating a strong livestock background and the following attributes:
- Proven experience in a senior farm hand, overseer, or assistant manager role
- Strong livestock handling and production management skills with sheep and cattle
- Capability to assist with grazing rotation decisions and execute annual livestock production plans
- Experience operating and maintaining farm machinery and infrastructure
- Proficiency in farm software such as AgriWebb for digital record-keeping
- Strong communication, leadership, and team management capabilities
- Ability to work autonomously, keep operations moving forward without constant prompting, and lead contractors
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work both in a team and autonomously
The following skillsets would be advantageous:
- AgriWebb knowledge
- Chemcert
- Front End Loader ticket
- Completion of the Lifetime Ewe Management course
- Motorbike licence
- First Aid ticket
