About the opportunity
Illuminate the Past - Inspire the Future.
At Artefact, we believe good Connecting with Country work begins with relationships, listening and respect for the people whose knowledge informs a project.
We’re looking for a Community Consultation Officer to join our Country and Culture team and contribute to Aboriginal Cultural Values and Connecting with Country projects.
This is an early-career opportunity. You might bring experience from community programs, cultural projects, research, land management or another people-focused role. You don’t need to have worked in a heritage consultancy before, and formal qualifications are not required.
Bring your curiosity, an interest in Country and culture, and a willingness to learn. We’ll support you to build your skills and find your place in the cultural heritage field.
What you’ll do
Working alongside experienced colleagues, you’ll:
- Help plan and coordinate consultation with Aboriginal communities, organisations and project stakeholders.
- Participate in meetings, workshops and site visits, helping create a welcoming environment for people to contribute.
- Keep clear records of consultation activities and help follow up on agreed actions.
- Undertake research and contribute to Aboriginal Cultural Values and Connecting with Country reports.
- Help ensure information shared through consultation is represented accurately and used in accordance with community guidance.
- Support project coordination and collaborate with colleagues across Artefact’s heritage teams.
You’ll have guidance and support as you learn. You won’t be expected to lead complex consultation programs, manage project budgets or sign off reports independently from day one.
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for someone who listens carefully, builds respectful relationships and follows through on their commitments.
You’ll bring:
- An interest in Aboriginal cultural heritage, Country and community-led approaches to project work.
- Clear communication skills and a respectful approach to working with communities, colleagues and clients.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- An interest in research, recording information and contributing to written work.
- A willingness to learn, ask questions and share your experience with the team.
- A current C class driver’s licence for site visits and project activities.
Experience in community consultation, cultural programs, Aboriginal heritage or research would be welcome, but is not essential. We value experience gained through community and cultural work, employment, volunteering and study.
Where this could take you
This role could be your gateway to a career in cultural heritage. Through Artefact’s Aboriginal Cultural Heritage program,
we want to support more Aboriginal people to build careers as consultants—bringing their perspectives and expertise to work that affects Country and community.
You’ll begin by developing your skills in community consultation and Connecting with Country. As your interests and experience grow, there may be opportunities to work alongside colleagues in archaeology, anthropology, public art and interpretation, and the built environment.
You don’t need to have your future mapped out. We’ll support you to explore what interests you, build your skills and grow towards a career that feels meaningful to you.
Benefits and perks
At Artefact, we know our success depends on supporting our people to grow—personally and professionally. Our benefits include:
- Adaptable work options, including work-from-home opportunities.
- Professional development leave and a professional development allowance.
- Regular training and informal learning opportunities.
- Paid membership of the relevant professional organisation.
- Career pathways as you build your experience and explore your interests.
- Personal wellbeing support.
- A close-knit, collaborative team that supports each other.
Our commitments
Our commitments guide how we work with communities, clients and each other:
- FIRST NATIONS FIRST — Be guided by our First Nations Communities.
- BE ACTIVISTS — Stand against inequality and injustice.
- SUPPORT CLIMATE JUSTICE — Strive to reduce climate impact.
- DO THE RIGHT THING — Make ethical decisions.
An Aboriginal identified role
This position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants. It is part of Artefact’s commitment to supporting Aboriginal voices and growing Aboriginal careers in cultural heritage.
You’ll help build relationships with Aboriginal communities and contribute to projects informed by their knowledge, priorities and connection to Country. Working alongside experienced colleagues and the communities involved, you’ll have support to learn, contribute and build your career.
