About University of Queensland Union (UQU)
UQU has been the heart of student life since our founding, led by students, for students. What began as a collective of passionate individuals has grown into a dynamic organisation representing more than 60,000 students across UQ's campuses.
We're the spark behind campus's most unforgettable moments, festivals, advocacy campaigns, clubs and societies, and we're there when students need us most, through free meals and Student Advocacy & Support services that look after their wellbeing.
Every club we support, every voice we amplify, every event we bring to life, we do it to empower students to get the most from their university journey.
We're a team of organisers, campaigners, advocates, and community-builders working collaboratively to back students every step of the way, empowering them to lead our strategic direction based on what students care about. We take our work seriously, and thousands of students rely on us every day.
About the role
Do you love being on the ground when an event comes together? Are you organised, hands‑on and happiest when you're working with people to create great experiences?
We're looking for an enthusiastic Events Officer to join UQU's Student Engagement and Activities team – the team behind the campus events, festivals and markets that make student life at UQ.
Working with the Senior Events Coordinator, you'll help plan and deliver UQU's annual calendar of events, including flagship events, and coordinate smaller student‑focused events using our established templates, checklists and procedures.
You'll also coordinate the weekly Wednesday Markets – liaising with stallholders, managing bookings and site layout, and making sure each market runs smoothly on the day.
This is a hands‑on role. Before, during and after events you'll be on site – bumping in and out, setting up stalls, marquees and equipment, checking in suppliers and stallholders, working from the run sheet and being a friendly point of contact for students and attendees.
Behind the scenes, you'll set up Humanitix event pages, keep event plans, run sheets and supplier records up to date, record attendance and event data, and flag any risks or issues early. You'll work with the Marketing team, suppliers, venues, University stakeholders and the Gatton Student Engagement Manager to make sure events are well‑resourced and compliant.
You’ll be successful in this role if you’re reliable, organised and calm under pressure, and you have a genuine passion for building a vibrant student community.
About you
- Certificate IV in Events, Business or a related field with relevant work experience; or a Diploma with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training
- Experience helping to coordinate or deliver events, markets, engagement activities or programs – paid, volunteer, student club or society experience all count
- Experience working with suppliers,
stallholders, vendors or contractors – for example, confirming bookings, schedules or on‑the‑day arrangements
- Experience using, or the ability to quickly learn, event registration or ticketing platforms (e.g. Humanitix, Eventbrite), and keeping accurate records
- Awareness of event safety and compliance requirements, such as risk assessments, supplier certificates and licences, and a willingness to follow established procedures
- Experience working in a university, student union or not‑for‑profit setting (highly regarded)
- Current open driver's licence and a current Blue Card (or the ability to obtain one)
- Availability to work outside standard hours, including early starts, evenings and some weekends, to support event delivery
What's in it for you
- A real prospect to help build a positive culture and make a genuine impact
- Hands‑on experience across a busy annual calendar of campus events
- A close‑knit community across our St Lucia, Gatton and Dutton Park campuses
- Campus‑wide F&B; discounts at UQU‑owned outlets
Inclusion, diversity & culture
We believe great teams are built on genuine belonging, where people bring their full selves to work and feel respected, protected, and valued for who they are, whatever their background. If you need adjustments to do your best work, just talk to your manager – inclusion here is practical, not performative. Our values - Integrity, Respect, Inclusivity, Creativity, Openness, and Accountability to students, are the foundation of how we operate, treat each other, and make our decisions.
