CKG Search has been exclusively instructed by one of Australia's largest and most recognised retail groups, a household name trading from hundreds of stores across Australia and New Zealand, to appoint a senior in-house lawyer.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will join a team supporting the retail businesses. This is a true generalist commercial brief: the supplier and sourcing contracts behind a business that designs and manufactures the large majority of what it sells, the Australian Consumer Law questions behind the products on shelf, and the day to day intellectual property and marketing issues behind every campaign. You will work directly with merchandise, sourcing, marketing, digital and operations leaders, at retail pace and with real ownership of your matters.
On Offer
- A generous remuneration package, plus an annual cash bonus and employee share scheme participation
- A team structured so that you own your matters end to end
- Broad career mobility across a diversified group, including future moves into other portfolios and/or leadership roles
- A brand new, purpose built workplace with end of trip facilities, excellent transport access and parking
- Hybrid working on a 3:2 basis, paid parental leave, community and volunteering leave, generous retail discounts and study assistance
- Meaningful involvement in a large scale AI rollout, both customer facing and internal, with scope to build tools rather than only advise on them
While the role is offered on a full-time, hybrid basis, our client is open to discussing flexible working arrangements and reasonable adjustments to support your success.
Responsibilities
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating supplier, sourcing, manufacturing, procurement, services, logistics and technology agreements
- Advising on Australian Consumer Law issues spanning product safety, consumer guarantees, warranties, pricing, promotions and packaging claims
- Reviewing marketing campaigns, advertising claims, influencer activity and collateral, and advising on brand and IP usage alongside a dedicated IP specialist
- Supporting recent commercial models and strategic projects, including marketplace, retail media and digital commerce activity
- Advising on technology, data and AI initiatives and helping shape practical guardrails
- Building templates, playbooks and self-service tools, and training business teams to use them
- Managing external counsel on specialist matters
Requirements
- Law degree and an Australian Practising Certificate (or eligibility)
- Approximately 7 to 12 years PQE, though our client is genuinely open on the number and will assess the person, capability and trajectory
- Strong commercial contracting experience from a leading firm, in-house, or a combination of both
- Demonstrated Australian Consumer Law capability
- Practical intellectual property knowledge in a marketing or brand context
- Consumer goods, FMCG, retail or other consumer facing sector exposure will be well regarded
- Curiosity and comfort with technology and AI, and a willingness to adopt and build new ways of working
- Energy, pace and a can-do attitude, with the confidence to pick up unfamiliar matters
This role will suit a commercially minded generalist who is looking for a seat at the table in a large highly-regarded retailer.
If you want your work on the shelves, in the campaigns and inside the technology of a business millions of Australians use every week, this is the one to talk about.
