The Financial Controller is responsible for the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of the Group's financial reporting, accounting, payroll, financial controls and compliance. The role is a senior, hands-on finance position supporting an integrated property group operating across land acquisition and development, residential and commercial construction, project management and the sale of the Group's own residential allotments, house and land packages and completed dwellings.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller provides strong financial discipline across multiple entities, projects and business units. The role has particular responsibility for management reporting, property and construction accounting, cash flow, payroll processing, loan establishment and administration, settlements, taxation, statutory compliance, financial systems and internal controls.
The Financial Controller works closely with the CFO and operational leaders across Development, Construction and Sales and is expected to combine strong technical accounting capability with a practical understanding of property development, construction operations and project finance.
Key responsibilities
- Own the Group's month-end and year-end financial reporting processes and ensure accurate and timely completion of management accounts, balance sheets, profit and loss statements and cash flow reporting
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger across the Group's entities, projects and business units
- Prepare consolidated Group reporting and provide analysis of performance against budget, forecast and prior periods
- Maintain appropriate financial accounting and reporting for individual development projects, stages and entities
- Ensure accurate recording and reporting of land acquisition costs,
development expenditure, civil and infrastructure costs, capitalised development costs, inventory and work in progress, project funding and interest, sales revenue, settlements, cost of sales and project margins
- Maintain effective financial controls across the Group's residential and commercial construction operations
- Ensure construction costs are accurately captured by project, job and cost code
- Take a key operational role in the establishment, documentation, drawdown and ongoing administration of finance facilities associated with land acquisitions, land development and residential and commercial construction projects
- Prepare and process the Group's payroll, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time and associated payroll obligations are correctly calculated, recorded and remitted
- Coordinate the annual budgeting process across the Group
About you
- Degree qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline
- CA or CPA qualification, or equivalent professional accounting qualification
- Significant experience in financial control, management accounting or a comparable senior finance role
- Strong understanding of Australian Accounting Standards and taxation and compliance requirements
- Demonstrated experience managing month-end and year-end financial reporting
- Robust balance sheet, cash flow and financial control capability
- Practical experience processing payroll and managing associated payroll compliance obligations
- Demonstrated capability in establishing and administering loan facilities, preferably for property acquisition, development and/or construction
- Experience working within a multi-entity environment
- Advanced Excel and strong ERP and financial systems capability
