The Team & Role

The Grade 2 physiotherapist will work primarily across the Emergency department, Short stay unit, Acute ward and in community outpatients located at Wonthaggi campus and the Phillip Island Health Hub of Bass Coast Health.

The successful candidate will have a broad theoretical knowledge and clinical background across gerontology, cardiorespiratory, vestibular and orthopaedics. They draw on this knowledge to problem-solve and facilitate complex assessments, management and discharge planning of these populations. They are a highly valued member of the multidisciplinary team and work collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for the patients.

The successful candidate will be involved in the supervision and education of junior physiotherapists, AHA’s and undergraduate students.

They will work closely with the Acute Grade 3 physiotherapist in service development, staff education and training, as well as contribution to continuous improvement projects.

Through this role the candidate will have the opportunity to continue to build and consolidate their leadership skills in high level communication, effective time management and organisational skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

- Conduct comprehensive physiotherapy assessments of patients of the designated unit;
- Attend MDT meetings and ward rounds, contribute to discharge planning and provide physiotherapy intervention for patients of the designated units;
- Provide exercise programs, gait aid prescription, mobility retraining etc individually or in groups;
- Conduct regular re-evaluations of client’s functional ability and review in relation to the set goals;
- Recognise patient medical and/or mental health deterioration and escalates in a timely manner;
- Involve clients and carers in the goal setting process, intervention and discharge plan;
- Document all assessment, treatment and discharge information in the patients’ electronic medical record, consistent with program and departmental protocols and Bayside Health Regional Care Group policies;
- Meet the clinical activity targets as set by the program;
- Adhere to Victorian privacy laws – Information Privacy Act 2000 and the Health Records Act 2001,



as well as other laws that regulate the handling of personal information;
- Undertake other duties as directed by senior physiotherapists and/or physiotherapy manager;
- Assist senior physiotherapists to develop, implement and evaluate systems to minimise clinical risk and promote an effective and efficient service
- Potentially working on weekends (overtime and/or time in lieu shifts).

Education, Quality & Research

- Participate in the development and implementation of orientation and education programs for staff;
- Undertake clinical supervision of undergraduate physiotherapy students as required;
- Participate in ongoing education through attendance at seminars, workshops and conferences relevant to the position;
- Participate in the physiotherapy in-service program and staff meetings;
- Understand own role in improving patient care through contribution to research and evaluation projects as required;
- Complete all required competency based assessment and learning activities related to the role within 2 months of commencing;
- Display knowledge of research, new developments and evidence based practice in physiotherapy in clinical area;
- Demonstrate an ability to initiate, implement and evaluate simple service development and process improvement projects as required;
- Assume responsibility for relevant administrative portfolios, working parties or other tasks, as directed by the senior physiotherapists and/or physiotherapy manager;

Professional Development and Supervision

- Maintain a high standard of physiotherapy knowledge in relevant clinical areas through ongoing participation in career development, quality and/or research forums, and integrates learning within clinical practice;
- Assume responsibility for own learning needs, and develop personal learning objectives;
- Participate in regular professional supervision with allocated supervisor in accordance with service protocols;
- Respond to constructive feedback from supervisor regarding work performance, and utilise supervision to reflect upon and improve clinical and/or professional practice skills;
- Provide formal supervision to Grade 1 clinicians and or Allied Health Assistants and Physiotherapy students, as directed by the Physiotherapy Manager;
- Report to the supervisor on the issues affecting achievement of objectives;
- Comply with Discipline Peak body and AHPRA – CPD requirements, in order to maintain registration status.
- Participate in annual performance appraisal (at minimum). The performance of the physiotherapist will be reviewed annually and will be measured by the extent to which agreed objectives and outcomes are met. Objectives and required outcomes will be agreed in discussions between the Physiotherapy Manager and the physiotherapist.

Team and Communication

- Establish and maintain effective and appropriate therapeutic relationships with patients and their families/carers;
- Establish effective working relationships (both formal and informal) with the service staff,



other Bayside Health service providers and community-based services to promote an integrated approach to service delivery;
- Promote best practice teamwork principles and actively contribute to the interdisciplinary team;
- Provide effective and timely feedback to other staff on patient assessment outcomes, and recommendations for ongoing care;
- Actively participate in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, ensuring effective communication, dissemination of information and decision-making;
- Actively participate in monthly physiotherapy staff meetings;
- Actively participate in monthly senior physiotherapy staff meetings;
- Work in partnership with colleagues in other units to ensure an integrated approach to service delivery throughout Bayside Health;
- Consult effectively with allocated supervisor;
- Foster a culture of openness, respect, accountability and professionalism in the workplace;
- Demonstrate a customer service focus and cultural sensitivity with interactions with patients, carers, staff and the community;
- Display sound conflict resolution and negotiation skills;

Skills & Experience Required

- Demonstrated clinical competence and expertise in cardiorespiratory, general medicine and orthopaedic physiotherapy
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, modelling and promoting interdisciplinary practice;
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to principles of continuous quality improvement
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate and modify service delivery in accordance with evidence-based practice;
- Well developed communication and interpersonal skills to promote teamwork;
- Demonstrated participation in professional development relevant to the position
