About the role

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated looking for an Ophthalmic Technician / Ophthalmic Nurse Technician to join our modern refractive East Melbourne-based clinic on a casual basis. You will work closely with our specialist team, assisting in diagnostics, surgical planning, and providing exceptional care throughout the patient journey.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in ophthalmology , with strong clinical knowledge and hands-on experience in refractive and corneal laser procedures. This role is suited to someone confident working in a fast-paced surgical environment who can work independently while being an effective member of a multidisciplinary clinical team.

Experience with SCHWIND AMARIS and ATOS laser platforms is essential.

Key Responsibilities





- Assist ophthalmic surgeons and clinical staff during laser eye surgery and associated procedures.

- Prepare patients for refractive and corneal procedures, including pre-operative checks and surgical preparation.

- Assist with LASIK, PRK, SMILE, CXL and PTK procedures.

- Demonstrate practical knowledge and experience operating or assisting with SCHWIND AMARIS and ATOS laser systems .

- Prepare and check the laser theatre, equipment and surgical instruments prior to procedures.

- Assist with patient positioning, surgical preparation and intra-operative requirements.

- Maintain strict adherence to infection prevention, sterilisation and clinical safety protocols.

- Perform appropriate equipment checks and ensure surgical equipment is prepared and functioning correctly.

- Assist with post-operative patient care and provide appropriate clinical instructions within scope of practice.

- Complete accurate clinical documentation and surgical records.

- Identify and escalat any clinical concerns or abnormalities to the treating ophthalmologist or senior clinical staff.

- Maintain a high standard of patient care, professionalism and confidentiality.

- Assist with maintaining stock levels and ensuring clinical areas are clean, organised and appropriately prepared.

- Work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, technicians and administrative staff.

- Support the clinic's quality, safety and continuous improvement processes.

- Travel to and work at other clinic locations as required,



including our East Melbourne and Richmond locations.

About you

Essential Experience

- Minimum 3 years’ experience working in ophthalmology .

- Previous experience in a laser eye surgery / refractive surgery environment .

- Demonstrated experience with:

- LASIK

- PRK

- SMILE

- CXL (Corneal Cross-Linking)

- PTK (Phototherapeutic Keratectomy)

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with SCHWIND AMARIS and ATOS laser systems .

- Strong understanding of ophthalmic surgical procedures and clinical workflows.

- Knowledge of infection control, sterilisation and theatre safety requirements.

- Ability to work confidently in a fast-paced surgical environment.

- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

- Ability and willingness to travel between clinic locations, including East Melbourne and Richmond, when required.

- Current relevant registration and/or qualifications appropriate to the role, where applicable.

Desirable Experience

- Experience in refractive surgery and corneal procedures.

- Experience with laser theatre setup and troubleshooting.

- Experience assisting with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and pre-operative assessments.

- Experience working alongside ophthalmic surgeons and optometrists.

- Familiarity with clinical documentation and electronic medical record systems.
