Lead. Practise. Build something that lasts.
We're looking for an experienced Principal Solicitor to lead the legal practice of a Community Legal Centre based in Broken Hill, supporting people across Far West NSW who experience disadvantage and barriers to accessing justice.
This is a genuine opportunity to combine hands-on legal practice, professional supervision, people leadership and service development while making a visible difference in a regional community.
With funding through to 30 June 2030, this is more than a short-term regional posting. You'll have the chance to build relationships, develop the team and contribute to the long-term development of legal services across Far West NSW.
The opportunity
Based in Broken Hill, you'll lead the quality and development of the legal practice while continuing to provide legal advice, casework, advocacy and representation.
You won't be working in isolation. The role forms part of a broader regional legal network, with strong connections across areas including Mildura, Swan Hill and surrounding communities. You'll have access to experienced legal professionals, broader practice support and opportunities to share knowledge and collaborate.
The service provides generalist and family law services, family violence support and duty lawyer services, alongside legal education and outreach to communities including Wilcannia, Menindee, Ivanhoe, Tibooburra and White Cliffs.
The role will include:
- Providing legal advice, casework, advocacy and representation.
- Leading and overseeing high-quality, ethical legal practice.
- Supervising, mentoring and developing solicitors.
- Supporting workload management, professional development and staff wellbeing.
- Overseeing legal file review, quality assurance,
risk management and compliance.
- Contributing to service planning, community engagement and strategic partnerships.
- Building relationships with community organisations, government agencies, courts and the legal sector.
- Contributing to law reform, policy development and systemic advocacy.
- Supporting outreach and legal education across Far West NSW.
Travel throughout the region will be required, including outreach to remote communities and duty lawyer services. Overnight travel will occasionally be required.
You don't need to have previously held the title of Principal Solicitor to be considered.
We're interested in speaking with experienced Senior Solicitors who are ready for the next step, as well as existing Principal or Supervising Solicitors.
Your background could include:
- Community Legal Centres
- Legal Aid
- Aboriginal Legal Service
- Government legal services
- Family law
- Family violence / domestic violence
- Criminal law and court advocacy
- Duty lawyer services
- Relevant private practice
What matters most is that you have substantial legal experience, strong professional judgement, leadership capability and a genuine commitment to people experiencing disadvantage.
What you'll need
- Australian legal qualification and admission as an Australian lawyer.
- Eligibility to hold an unrestricted practising certificate and practise as a principal, where applicable.
- Significant experience providing legal advice, casework, advocacy and/or representation.
- Experience supervising and mentoring legal practitioners.
- Strong understanding of legal ethics, professional responsibility, risk management and quality practice.
- Experience working with people experiencing disadvantage.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to social justice, human rights and access to justice.
- Understanding of Community Legal Centres and/or the broader legal assistance sector.
- Commitment to client-centred, trauma-informed, culturally safe and inclusive practice.
- Current driver's licence and willingness to travel.
Why Broken Hill?
Broken Hill offers the opportunity to do legal work where your contribution is visible and your relationships with the community genuinely matter.
You'll work directly with local organisations, courts and community services and help improve access to justice across some of the most remote communities in NSW.
While Broken Hill is your home base, you'll be part of a broader regional network with professional connections across areas including Mildura and Swan Hill.
This is also not a short-term regional stint. With the position funded through to June 2030, there is a genuine opportunity to put down roots, build relationships and contribute to something lasting.
What you'll receive
- $109,251 - $132,928 + superannuation
- Up to $15,834 tax-free salary packaging
- Full-time position
- Fixed-term contract through to 30 June 2030
- Flexible working arrangements where appropriate
- Employee Assistance Program
- Study leave and practical assistance for approved courses
- Discounted gym and health club membership
- Supportive, family-friendly working environment
Desired Skills and Experience
Lead a growing legal service in Broken Hill, combining hands-on practice and leadership with a long-term opportunity to shape access to justice.
