The opportunity
This Senior Solicitor role is responsible for conducting sensitive or complex litigation on behalf of the Commissioner of State Revenue. Senior Solicitors also provide authoritative internal legal advice on sensitive or complex matters relating to a broad range of tax related issues.
Utilise your advisory and litigation skills in an in-house government solicitor role while undertaking meaningful legal work under the mentorship and guidance of experienced solicitors in a collaborative team workplace. This will include all aspect of the conduct of litigation on behalf of the Commissioner of State Revenue, including case preparation, briefing counsel and instructing at hearing.
Reporting to a Principal Solicitor, you will be able to:
- Prepare, conduct and manage sensitive, complex and or high impact projects and cases for litigation at VCAT and the Courts
- Instruct Counsel at interlocutory proceedings and substantive hearings and appear as solicitor-advocate at interlocutory proceedings
- Initiate research and analysis to provide authoritative legal advice and assistance on complex matters relating to Acts administered by the SRO or cross discipline matters
- Mentor and develop less experienced Legal Officers as required.

Who we are looking for
To be successful in this role,
you will have:
- been admitted as an Australian Lawyer, with
- a minimum of 2 years' post-admission experience as an Australian lawyer in the public or private sector, preferably with litigation experience in the tribunal and courts and eligibility to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate
- extensive experience as a lawyer (or related legal/administrative decision-making role) in the public or private sector, with strong practice management skills.
- experience in the conduct of legal hearings in various courts and knowledge of Parliamentary procedures and legislative process.
- sound legal research and analytical skills and the ability to correctly identify key legal issues independently
- demonstrated ability to provide good quality, accurately researched written work in a timely manner
- excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders, including self-represented litigants
- strong computer skills and demonstrated ability to work productively in a hybrid legal environment
