As a critical team member, you will be at the heart of our support services function in the Torres Strait, Northern Peninsula Area, and remote Aboriginal communities. Operating in 31 retail stores across remote locations, CEQ ensures access to quality fresh food, groceries, and essential services like fuel, gas, and ATM facilities. Your role will be based in the busy and culturally diverse Cairns Support Office.

About the role
Based in Cairns, this exciting development opportunity is ideal for someone passionate about nutrition, health and wellbeing and interested in pursuing a career as a qualified nutritionist or dietitian.
As the Future Leader - Nutrition, you will gain practical experience, mentoring and professional development while supporting culturally responsive nutrition programs, community engagement initiatives and healthy retailing practices across CEQ's remote store network.
Working alongside CEQ Store Nutritionists and the Good Food People workforce, you will assist with health promotion activities, develop culturally appropriate resources and travel to remote communities to support program delivery. Through this role, you will contribute to building a culturally responsive nutrition workforce and strengthening healthy retailing outcomes across remote communities in partnership with ALPA, Outback Stores and other remote retail organisations.
Partnering with a cross-cultural, geographically dispersed team from Cairns to Cape York Peninsula, Gulf of Carpentaria,
North Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands, the Future Leader Nutrition will be working towards becoming a qualified nutritionist/dietitian while working in alignment with the CEQ vision and values and playing an integral role in ensuring the ongoing success and reputation of CEQ as an employer of choice.
Key Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to
- Support the design and delivery of the Good Food People Program
- Provide regular mentoring and support to the Valuable Food People via phone calls and Microsoft Teams
- Travel to remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Northern Queensland with CEQ Store Nutritionists to provide mentoring and support to the Good Food People and to operationalise the ALPA Health and Nutrition Strategy
- Support the Nutrition and Health team with community engagement and contribute to establishing and maintaining partnerships with community agencies, local health organisations.
- Support the Nutrition and Health team in resource development, internal and external communications in a culturally appropriate and safe way.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the CEQ 'Healthy Ways' health promotion campaign, including developing health promotion activities, recipes and materials to promote healthy messaging.
- In partnership with Store Nutritionists and Good Food People, deliver local in-store health promotion activities which may include cooking demonstrations taste-testing and health promotion
- Support Store Nutritionists to deliver training on the CEQ nutrition policy and develop store team knowledge of healthy foods and drinks
- Support the Store Nutritionists to conduct regular assessments of healthy store environments and compliance with the CEQ nutrition policy
- Work in a cross-cultural team environment and provide peer support to the Nutrition and Health team.
- Monitor WH&S; to ensure staff safety and a safe workplace.
Qualifications & Experience
- Senior secondary school certificate
- Previous experience working or living in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is desirable but not essential
- Certificate level qualifications in a relevant field (e.g. Certificate II in Retail, Hospitality, Community Services, Primary Health Care) are desirable but not essential
- Demonstrated interest in nutrition, health and wellbeing and working with First Nations communities
- Sound organisational skills and reliability
- Sound written and oral communication skills, including an interest in developing public speaking skills
- Ability to work in a cross-cultural team environment
- Willingness to travel and work in remote communities.
Team
- Work as part of the Nutrition & Health team and provide support as reasonably required.
- Ability to work in a cross-cultural team environment and provide peer support to other team members
- Build and foster collegial relationships across all teams in the business to ensure high team member engagement, productivity and the success of CEQ.
Software & Systems Experience
- Sound levelof competency using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
- Intermediate level of competency using Canva
