Intermediate Accountant | Business Services
Salary: $80,000 to $95,000 + superannuation

This hybrid opportunity suits an Intermediate Accountant who enjoys preparing accurate accounts and tax returns, resolving client queries and understanding the businesses behind the numbers.
Compliance is the initial focus, with management reporting and opportunities to assist with advisory reports adding breadth. Managers and Senior Accountants provide guidance and review as your technical confidence and responsibility grow.
Financial support for CA/CPA studies, monthly RDOs and ongoing professional development strengthen the longer-term appeal.
The Role
Working within a smaller team in a larger practice, you will prepare business services assignments and develop greater ownership of your workload with appropriate oversight.
Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing annual financial statements and tax returns for businesses and related entities
- Completing BAS and other tax compliance assignments
- Preparing management reports and assisting with advisory reports under guidance
- Liaising with clients and bookkeepers to obtain information and resolve queries
- Providing practical Xero support to clients where required
- Managing assigned deadlines and keeping Managers and Seniors informed of progress
- Applying review feedback to improve technical accuracy and skilled judgement
Strong preparation skills are central to the position, alongside the confidence to pick up the phone, ask questions and keep work moving.

Our client is an established, locally owned accounting and advisory firm based in Newcastle,
supporting business owners across the Hunter and beyond.
The business-focused client base includes SMEs, private businesses and related family and investment structures. Services extend from accounting and tax compliance to forecasting, strategic planning, valuations, acquisitions and succession advice.
A smaller team structure provides close working relationships and a clear reporting line, backed by the knowledge and resources of the wider practice.
Modern systems include Xero, XPM, FYI Docs and Xero Workpapers, with an ongoing emphasis on improving processes and client delivery.
What You’ll Bring
- At least four years of business services experience in public practice
- A degree in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline
- CA or CPA studies underway
- Solid accounting and Australian taxation foundations
- Strong working knowledge of Xero
- Careful preparation skills and attention to detail
- Clear, approachable communication with clients and colleagues
- The ability to organise assignments, meet deadlines and seek guidance when needed
Experience with XPM, FYI Docs and Xero Workpapers will be viewed favourably.
