About the International Eucharistic Congress
Eucharist28 is a global Catholic event centred on the celebration of the Eucharist. Sydney will host the next Congress in 2028, bringing tens of thousands of international pilgrims to the city alongside hundreds of thousands of Australians.
The 2028 Congress will mark the centenary of Australia's first International Eucharistic Congress, held in Sydney in 1928. Last hosted in Australia in 1973, the Congress is celebrated every four years in a different location. It will again place Sydney at the centre of the global Catholic Church and aims to renew Christian life and encourage participation in the life and mission of the Church.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, which is coordinating the Congress, is seeking an experienced conference and major events leader with a robust commitment to the Church's mission to help deliver this significant global event.
About the Role
The Senior Manager, Conference Events will lead the delivery of Eucharist28's conference program, including the Theological Symposium, Core Conference Program, Schools Program and Youth Festival. Serving more than 90,000 pilgrims, this role is accountable for all aspects of program delivery, from detailed planning and stakeholder coordination through to live event operations and post-event evaluation.
Reporting to the Director of Events and Operations, you will be the primary interface between Eucharist28 and the appointed Professional Conference Organiser. You will oversee integrated project plans, contractor performance, budgets and operational readiness across venues, registration, talent, accommodation, technology and pilgrim services.
During event delivery, you will provide operational leadership across the entire event program, working with venues, contractors, Church stakeholders, government agencies and emergency services. You will ensure risks, work health and safety, safeguarding, procurement and compliance requirements are addressed, and that significant issues are escalated and remedied promptly.
This is a full-time fixed-term position until 24 November 2028.
About You
You are an experienced conference or major events professional who combines disciplined planning with calm operational leadership. You can manage complex programs and fixed deadlines, hold contractors accountable and build productive relationships across Church, government, commercial and community settings.
As the ideal candidate, you will meet the following key requirements:
- Significant experience planning and delivering major conferences, conventions, congresses or large-scale events.
- Demonstrated experience managing Professional Conference Organisers, event delivery contractors, venues and specialist suppliers.
- Strong project management capability across multiple workstreams, stakeholders and fixed deadlines, including budgets,
procurement, contracts and supplier performance.
- Sound knowledge of venue operations, registration, participant services, operational readiness and event technology platforms.
- Demonstrated understanding of crowd management, security, emergency management and event risk requirements.
- Proven ability to work effectively with Church stakeholders, government agencies, emergency services and commercial partners.
- Calm and credible leadership, with sound judgement, strong negotiation skills and the ability to make considered decisions under pressure.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and experience in an Event Control Room would be well regarded. A current NSW Working with Children Check and demonstrated commitment to the ethos and values of the Catholic Church are required.
Your impact will be seen in a coordinated and operationally ready Eucharist28 conference program delivered safely, within approved budgets and to a high standard for pilgrims, speakers, performers and partners.
Applicants must have unrestricted work rights in Australia.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and must hold a current Working with Children Check, or be willing to obtain one.
Only candidates whose applications are progressed will be contacted.
