Lead Projects | Build Capability | Leave a Lasting Legacy.
The Council
Kowanyama is entering an exciting period of growth and investment, with significant housing developments, community infrastructure projects and service improvements shaping the future of the community. Located on the western side of Cape York Peninsula, Kowanyama is known as the "place of many waters" and is home to a proud and culturally rich community with strong connections to country, language, and tradition. The Council's vision is to build a healthy, safe, and prosperous community through innovation, collaboration and practical outcomes that improve everyday life.
This is an organisation that values visible leadership, community engagement, and long-term thinking. With strong momentum across capital works, housing, and essential services, you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects that leave a genuine and lasting impact on the community's future.
The Role
As Building Services Manager, you will be responsible for leading Council's building maintenance, construction and project delivery functions while overseeing a small team and a range of contractors. Reporting to the Executive Manager Roads, Infrastructure and Essential Services, you will coordinate maintenance programs, manage capital works, oversee contractor performance, and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with budget and compliance requirements.
Importantly, this role is about much more than buildings. You will play a key role in helping shape the capability of local staff, supporting trainees and tradespeople, strengthening workplace culture, and ensuring the community benefits from quality infrastructure outcomes. From housing programs and community facilities through to maintenance and improvement projects, no two days will look the same.
About You
Renowned for your strong computer skills, you are an experienced building, construction or maintenance professional who combines practical expertise with strong leadership capability. With a background that includes experience in local government and ideally working with QBuild your other experience could have been gained in the commercial construction, asset maintenance, or project management space. Regardless, you understand how to coordinate people, manage competing priorities, and deliver outcomes that matter.
You are highly organised,
comfortable working with budgets, contractors, and stakeholders, and possess the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in a remote environment. Most importantly, you are someone who values relationships, respects culture and genuinely enjoys mentoring others to achieve their full potential. Experience working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will be highly regarded, as will a commitment to creating opportunities for local people to succeed.
Why this Role
Some roles build infrastructure. This role helps build a community.
Kowanyama offers a rare opportunity to combine professional challenge with genuine purpose. You will step into a leadership position where your decisions and contributions can be seen every day, from new housing and community facilities to the development of local staff and contractors. Along the way, you will enjoy an extraordinary lifestyle surrounded by rich culture, world-class fishing, spectacular waterways, and a welcoming community spirit.
With a competitive salary package, subsidised accommodation, vehicle,
relocation assistance, and ongoing professional development, this is the ideal opportunity for a leader seeking meaningful work, personal growth, and the chance to leave a legacy that extends well beyond the projects themselves.
