Summary: The role involves fishing operations, catch handling and storage, deck work and vessel maintenance. Operations are focused on safety, sustainable fishing, product quality and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities & duties
· Deploy and retrieve mid-water trawl gear.
· Operate ropes, wires, winches and deck equipment as trained and directed.
· Handle, sort, process and store catch.
· Identify species and monitor catch and product quality.
· Assist with catch records and monitoring requirements.
· Load catch into vessel storage systems and assist with unloading.
· Inspect, clean and maintain nets, fishing gear, deck equipment and work areas.
· Undertake routine vessel maintenance.
· Follow directions from the Master and senior crew.
Role specific – Deckhand
· Berthing & Unberthing Vessel when in Port
· Handling and maintenance of mooring lines, anchoring and winches whilst undertaking fishing operations
· Operation and maintenance of deck winches and machineries
· Standing watch and navigation look out
· General safety duties; Fire-fighting and life-saving equipment maintenance
· Perform routine maintenance as directed by Skipper/Master
· Follow Master / Skipper Instructions
Experience & Competencies
· Minimum 3 years’ relevant commercial fishing or seagoing experience, with documented sea time.
· Demonstrated net mending experience, including identifying damage and repairing fishing nets.
