This opportunity is based a Western NSW, within the NSW public health system.
About the role
As a Mental Health Registered Nurse, you will provide person-centred nursing care to individuals experiencing a range of mental health conditions and, where relevant, alcohol and other drug-related concerns.
You will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to assess patients, develop care plans, support treatment and recovery, and promote positive clinical outcomes in a safe therapeutic environment.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct mental state assessments and ongoing clinical observations.
- Assess patient needs, identify clinical risks and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Develop, implement and evaluate individualised nursing care plans.
- Administer prescribed medications safely and monitor patient responses.
- Apply therapeutic communication and de-escalation strategies.
- Support patients experiencing acute mental health distress and complex presentations.
- Recognise and escalate changes in mental and physical health.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, handovers and incident reports.
- Collaborate with medical practitioners, psychiatrists,
allied health professionals and nursing colleagues.
- Promote patient dignity, privacy, cultural safety and recovery-oriented care.
- Follow relevant NSW Health policies, professional standards and clinical procedures.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.
- Experience in mental health nursing or a strong relevant clinical background.
- Sound clinical assessment, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of risk assessment, therapeutic communication and patient safety.
- Confidence in managing challenging situations professionally and calmly.
- Strong documentation, communication and teamwork skills.
- A compassionate, respectful and non-judgemental approach to patient care.
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice.
