Our team
The Chief Information and Transformation Officer (CITO) Branch leads Geoscience Australia’s digital, data, technology, security and transformation agenda. It works across the organisation to deliver secure, reliable and user‑centred services, improve organisational capability and enable sustainable change.
The role
The Enterprise Architect leads Geoscience Australia’s enterprise architecture,
ensuring that business strategy, organisational capabilities, information, applications and technology evolve coherently. The role provides authoritative advice and assurance, develops target‑state architectures and transition roadmaps, and identifies opportunities to simplify the technology estate, reduce risk and improve organisational capability.
The key duties of the position include: What you’ll do
You will provide enterprise‑wide leadership for architecture; connecting organisational strategy, business transformation and technology investment.
Lead enterprise architecture
- Establish and maintain business, information, application and technology architectures.
- Translate organisational strategy into principles, target states, capability models and transition roadmaps.
- Identify capability gaps, duplication, dependencies and improvement opportunities.
Provide architecture governance and assurance
- Maintain architecture governance, standards and assurance practices with the Director of Technology.
- Assess significant initiatives and designs for alignment with strategy, government policy, security requirements and technology direction.
- Manage architectural risks, exceptions and remediation.
Optimise the technology portfolio
- Maintain visibility of application and technology costs, risks and lifecycle status with the Director of ICT Service Management.
- Identify opportunities to modernise, consolidate or retire technology assets.
- Use evidence to inform investment and prioritisation decisions.
Enable transformation and build capability
- Work across business and delivery teams to develop implementable future‑state architectures and roadmaps.
- Build trusted relationships and facilitate decisions on priorities, risks and trade‑offs.
- Strengthen architecture capability through coaching, collaboration and shared practice.
Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
- Strategic, pragmatic and team-oriented leadership, with the ability to navigate complexity,
influence senior stakeholders and translate long‑term direction into practical decisions.
- Demonstrated experience leading enterprise architecture in a large, complex organisation.
- Strong knowledge of business, information, application and technology architecture.
- Demonstrated experience developing target states, roadmaps, governance and assurance practices.
- Experience using capability modelling and portfolio analysis to guide investment and transformation.
- Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or certifications, such as TOGAF, are desirable.

- Architecture principles, standards and roadmaps are current and actively used.
- Leaders receive clear architecture advice that improves strategy, investment and prioritisation decisions.
- Technology and data complexity, duplication and risk are visible and actively managed.
- Systems, data and services become more aligned, secure, interoperable and adaptable over time.
Eligibility
- Be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.
- The successful applicant must be able to obtain, hold and maintain a security clearance of an appropriate level relevant to this role.
- Commencement of employment is subject to the successful applicant undergoing and satisfying pre‑employment screening, which includes a police history check.
