An established national business is looking to appoint a Legal Counsel to join its small, highly engaged legal team in Sydney.
This is a hands-on commercial role suited to a lawyer who enjoys being close to the business, negotiating deals and providing practical advice rather than operating in a heavily process-driven legal environment.
Working closely with the General Counsel and stakeholders across the organisation, approximately 60–70% of the role will focus on commercial contracting, with the remaining 30–40% predominantly focused on privacy-related matters.
The work
You will have exposure to a broad range of commercial matters, including:
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating customer and vendor agreements
- Advising on commercial transactions and contractual risk
- Privacy, data protection and related compliance matters
- Providing practical legal advice to internal stakeholders
- Supporting disputes and broader business risk matters
- Advising on general corporate and commercial issues as they arise
The environment is fast-moving and transactional, with the legal team expected to understand the commercial drivers behind a matter and help the business reach an appropriate outcome.
About you
You will be an Australian-qualified lawyer with 3+ years' post-qualification experience in private practice, ideally with strong privacy law exposure.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Legal Counsel experience advantageous
- Strong commercial contract drafting and negotiation experience
- Positive working knowledge of Australian privacy law
- The confidence to engage directly with commercial stakeholders
- A practical, solutions-focused approach to legal advice
You do not need to be a privacy specialist, however you will need sufficient experience to confidently advise on privacy-related matters as part of a broader commercial role.
Why consider this opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join a lean legal function where you will have direct exposure to the General Counsel, meaningful ownership of your work and regular interaction with the wider business.
The role offers hybrid working from a Sydney CBD office, a broad commercial workload and a salary of $170k-$190k incl super + performance bonus.
