The Opportunity
McArthur is currently seeking an experienced Community Safety Officer to join our Local Government client in Melbourne's west.
This is an opportunity to play an important role in supporting the safety, amenity and compliance of the local community. Working across the municipality, you will provide guidance and education to residents, ratepayers and visitors, while also undertaking compliance and enforcement activities in line with relevant legislation, Council policies and Local Laws.
This is a temporary two-month assignment commencing 1 December and running through to the end of February, offering full-time hours at a casual rate of $51.24 per hour + Super. The successful applicant must have a drivers license, and working with children check, or an ability to obtain one.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Provide guidance, advice and assistance to residents, ratepayers and visitors regarding community compliance matters.
- Respond promptly to complaints and undertake timely investigations, ensuring appropriate customer feedback is provided.
- Effectively plan your time and actively patrol the municipality as rostered or required, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and issuing notices where necessary in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Accurately record and submit daily activities and maintain Council systems on a task-by-task basis.
- Identify and report equipment, signage and other infrastructure requiring attention or that does not comply with relevant safety standards or legislation.
- Conduct inspections and audits of animal-related facilities, restricted breed premises and other areas in accordance with the relevant Act and Council's Animal Management Plan.
- Participate as part of the after-hours service, including on-call availability and overtime as required.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Comprehensive knowledge of legislation relating to Civic Amenity and Compliance.
- A degree or diploma with little or no relevant work experience, or a Certificate IV in Statutory Compliance (Government) and Animal Control and Regulation, supported by relevant work skills.
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with internal staff and customers and represent Council in a Court setting.
- The ability to confidently and professionally engage with highly emotional residents both at Council offices and throughout the municipality.
- Strong conflict resolution skills, with the ability to demonstrate empathy while appropriately enforcing Council decisions.
