Residential Care Officer

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Residential Care Officer to join our team in Tamworth, NSW. The successful applicant will support participants in residential and supported accommodation settings, assist with daily living activities, promote individual choice and independence, and contribute to a safe, inclusive and supportive workplace.
About the Role
This is a full-time position suited to a compassionate, responsible and organised professional with experience supporting people with disability or other complex support needs. The Residential Care Officer will work collaboratively with participants, families, support teams, service managers and other relevant stakeholders to deliver quality care in accordance with individual support plans, organisational policies and applicable legislative and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide person-centred support to participants in residential and supported accommodation settings, consistent with their individual needs, preferences and support plans.
- Assist participants with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility and meal preparation, where required and within the worker’s training and competency.
- Promote participants’ independence, choice, dignity, privacy, autonomy and participation in community and social activities.
- Support participants to develop daily living skills, maintain routines and work towards their individual goals.
- Assist with household activities, including cleaning, laundry, meal planning and maintaining a safe, hygienic and comfortable living environment.
- Monitor participants’ general wellbeing and promptly report changes in physical, emotional or behavioural presentation to the appropriate supervisor.
- Follow individual behaviour support plans and use appropriate, person-centred strategies to support participants experiencing distress or behaviours of concern.
- Follow medication management procedures and provide medication assistance only where authorised, trained and competent to do so.
- Identify, respond to and report incidents, injuries, hazards,
safeguarding concerns and suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with organisational procedures and applicable reporting obligations.
- Maintain accurate, timely and confidential participant records, progress notes, incident reports, communication logs and other required documentation.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures, work health and safety requirements, manual handling practices and emergency response procedures.
- Communicate effectively with participants, families, colleagues, allied health professionals and other stakeholders while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Participate in handovers, team meetings, supervision, training and professional development activities.
- Comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct, applicable NDIS Practice Standards, privacy and confidentiality requirements, and Connect Home Care policies and procedures.
- Perform other reasonable duties within the scope of the position, the employee’s competence and applicable legal requirements.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should demonstrate the following:
- A relevant qualification in Individual Support, Disability, Community Services, Mental Health, Ageing Support or a related field, such as a Certificate III or Certificate IV, or another qualification and experience combination genuinely relevant to the role.
- Previous experience in disability support, residential care, supported independent living, community services or a comparable care environment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide person-centred support and assist individuals with daily living activities while respecting their rights, dignity and independence.
- Understanding of safeguarding, incident reporting, privacy, infection control, work health and safety and professional boundaries.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain accurate participant documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team, follow support plans and organisational procedures, and respond appropriately to changing participant needs.
- Ability to meet the inherent requirements of the position, including the relevant physical and practical requirements of providing support, with reasonable adjustments where applicable.
Mandatory Checks and Other Requirements
The successful applicant will be required to provide or obtain the following, as applicable to the position and duties:
- NDIS Worker Screening Check: A valid clearance where required for the work performed.
- Working With Children Check: Where required for the position and the participant group.
- National Police Check: Where required by the organisation, applicable legislation, funding arrangements or the duties of the position.
- First Aid and CPR: Current certification, or willingness to obtain and maintain the required certification within the agreed timeframe, in accordance with the role’s requirements.
- Right to work in Australia: Evidence of current work rights and any applicable employment conditions.
- Reference checks: Satisfactory employment and professional reference checks.
- Mandatory training: Completion of required organisational induction and relevant training, including manual handling, infection prevention and control, incident reporting, medication support and participant safeguarding, as applicable.
- Driver licence: A current Australian driver licence and willingness to drive for work purposes, if driving participants or undertaking work-related travel is an actual requirement of the position.
All clearances, qualifications and training requirements will be assessed in accordance with applicable legislation and Connect Home Care policies.
Desirable Skills
The following would be advantageous:
- Experience supporting people with complex disability, psychosocial disability or behaviours of concern.
- Experience working in supported independent living or other residential support arrangements.
- Knowledge of the NDIS framework, participant rights, individual support plans and positive behaviour support.
- Experience maintaining electronic case notes and using care management or rostering systems.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
