Job Description
Assistant Venue Manager Concrete Boots Bar | Richmond, Melbourne Concrete Boots is an independent neighbourhood bar in Richmond, specialising in local craft beer, cocktails, excellent pub food and private functions. We're a small, friendly team with a relaxed atmosphere, but we take pride in doing things properly. We've been operating for over ten years and have grown into a popular venue for birthdays, engagements, corporate events and other private functions, alongside our regular local trade.
We're looking for a hands-on Assistant Venue Manager to help run the day-to-day operations of the venue, lead our front-of-house team and make sure our service, functions and procedures are consistently delivered to a high standard. This is a genuine leadership role where you'll work directly with me, the owner, and progressively take responsibility for running the venue independently. We're looking for someone who's relaxed, friendly and approachable, but also organised, proactive and willing to take ownership.
Someone who notices what needs doing, gets things done and helps the rest of the team do the same. The position would suit an experienced Bar Supervisor ready to take the next step, or an existing Assistant Venue Manager who enjoys working in a smaller, independent venue where they can make a real difference. Our Team Values Respect, Hard
Work, Mental Health, Humour and Composure. We believe in maintaining high standards without the unnecessary ego that can sometimes come with hospitality management. We're looking for someone who shares these values and can lead by example while helping us build a positive, productive and accountable team.
Experience and Qualities
- Proven experience supervising or leading a hospitality team, ideally in a bar, pub or function venue
- A relaxed, friendly and positive attitude, with the confidence to lead staff and maintain standards
- Strong initiative and the ability to identify and solve problems without constantly being asked
- Excellent planning, organisation and attention to detail
- Ability to train, motivate and hold staff accountable in a constructive and respectful way
- Experience running busy services and functions, including coordinating staff, customers and the kitchen
- A practical, hands-on approach who's happy to make drinks, clean, restock,
move furniture and help wherever needed
- An understanding of stock control, wastage, labour efficiency and how everyday decisions affect profitability
- Good communication skills and the ability to stay calm and make sensible decisions under pressure
- Comfortable using technology and following established systems and procedures
- Reliable, honest and willing to take responsibility for the venue when the owner isn't there
- An interest in craft beer, cocktails and quality customer service
You don't need to know everything on day one. We're more interested in finding someone with the right attitude, proven initiative and leadership ability who is willing to learn our systems and help improve the business. Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Running and supervising bar and FOH operations, including opening, closing and independently managing shifts
- Leading the team to deliver friendly, efficient and consistent customer service
- Preparing for and running private functions, including venue setup, staffing, drinks packages, food service and coordination with the kitchen
- Training and developing FOH staff while ensuring procedures and service standards are maintained
- Planning ahead so the venue is properly stocked, organised and prepared for upcoming services and functions
- Maintaining a clean, safe and well-presented venue, including bar areas, fridges, storerooms and customer areas
- Managing routine stocktakes, deliveries, ordering and wastage
- Monitoring staff productivity and making sure quiet periods are used effectively for cleaning, preparation and restocking
- Resolving customer complaints and everyday operational problems using initiative and good judgement
- Maintaining responsible service of alcohol, workplace safety and other operational compliance requirements
- Working with me to identify opportunities to improve our procedures, staff performance, customer experience and efficiency
This is very much a hands-on position. You'll spend most of your time working in the venue alongside the team rather than sitting behind a desk.
What We Offer
- A genuine leadership position with responsibility for day-to-day venue operations
- The opportunity to work directly with an experienced, hands-on owner who wants to give the right person real autonomy
- A small, independent workplace where your ideas and contributions actually matter
- A relaxed, friendly working environment with clear expectations and established procedures
- The opportunity to work with independent craft beers, cocktails, live events and a wide variety of private functions
- Structured training and development, with opportunities to expand your skills in venue operations, staff management, functions and business performance
- Established systems for recipes, procedures, inventory and rostering, including Restoke and Deputy
- The chance to help shape the team, improve how the venue operates and grow into greater responsibility
- A role where hard work, initiative and taking responsibility are genuinely appreciated
The position involves evening and weekend work, particularly Wednesday to Saturday, with flexibility required for private functions. A four-day working week may be possible depending on the final roster. Who
You'll Be Working
With I'm Andrew, the owner of Concrete Boots. I've worked in hospitality for over 20 years and still enjoy getting behind the bar, making great drinks and looking after our customers.
I've put a lot of work into building Concrete Boots, and I'm looking for someone who takes as much pride in the place as I do.
I want to spend more of my time growing the business, bringing in functions and improving what we offer, rather than having to personally oversee every shift and every little operational problem. I'm looking for someone I can trust to run the venue properly when
I'm not there. Someone who looks after the staff, customers and business, takes initiative and wants to keep improving things. In return, you'll have the opportunity to take real ownership of the day-to-day operations, develop your management skills and have a genuine say in how we do things.
If you're a capable hospitality operator who takes pride in your work, enjoys leading a team and wants more responsibility without the corporate hospitality B.S., I'd love to hear from you. Please send through your resume and a brief introduction explaining why you think you'd be a good fit for Concrete Boots.
