About us
Alpha One and Knoji Tuition are growing education businesses supporting students across six sites. Alpha One focuses primarily on students in Years 3–6, while Knoji Tuition serves students from Years 6–12.
We are seeking an experienced, commercially minded Chief Financial Officer to join our executive leadership team. Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a permanent part-time position working three days per week from our Bella Vista head office.
This is a hands-on executive role for someone who can combine strong financial control with forward-looking commercial advice. You will give the CEO and business leaders timely visibility over performance, identify emerging issues early and recommend practical actions that improve results.
The chance
You will have genuine influence over the direction and performance of a growing multi-site business. As a member of the executive leadership team, you will contribute to broader strategic and operational discussions while retaining clear ownership of the finance function.
You will lead a three-person internal finance function through the Accounting Team Manager, who directly manages two accountants/bookkeepers. You will also coordinate with the group’s external accountants and other professional advisers.
Key responsibilities
- Act as a trusted financial and commercial adviser to the CEO and executive leadership team.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain rolling financial forecasts, including a detailed, driver-based forecasting model incorporating enrolment, retention and operational assumptions across multiple sites and programs.
- Develop a deep understanding of the budget and underlying business drivers, identifying material variances, risks and opportunities early.
- Deliver timely and accurate monthly management reporting across six sites and six legal entities, explaining performance against budget, identifying the causes of material variances and recommending practical corrective actions.
- Personally present monthly financial results, risks and recommendations to branch leaders and the executive leadership team.
- Oversee cash-flow management, working capital and short- and medium-term cash forecasting.
- Maintain oversight of accounts receivable and customer accounts, including fee recovery, overdue balances and bad-debt exposure.
- Ensure internal accounts,
reconciliations and supporting information are accurate and finalised in time for the external accountants to complete statutory reporting, tax compliance and lodgements.
- Lead the finance function through the Accounting Team Manager, establishing clear priorities, standards and performance expectations, and strengthen accounting processes, financial controls, accruals and cost-allocation practices where needed.
- Partner with operational, HR and other functional leaders to assess financial implications and improve business performance, while those leaders retain ownership of their respective functions.
- Provide rigorous analysis, advice and constructive challenge on expenditure and investment decisions. Final spending approval remains with the CEO.
- Support financial analysis, due diligence and financing arrangements associated with acquisitions or other growth opportunities when required.
- Identify and implement practical uses of automation and AI to improve the accuracy, efficiency and usefulness of finance processes and reporting.
What success will look like
Within the first 6 months, you will have improved upon existing systems to deliver a proactive and trusted finance function that:
- Gives leaders timely, accurate and forward-looking visibility over performance.
- Maintains a reliable budget and rolling forecast across the group.
- Identifies financial risks and opportunities before they become urgent.
- Clearly explains what has happened, why it has happened and what the business should do next.
- Works constructively with each business area to improve performance against budget.
- Maintains disciplined cash management and oversight of customer accounts.
- Provides the CEO with clear, evidence-based recommendations for decision-making.
About you
You will bring:
- A current CA or CPA qualification.
- At least 10 years’ experience across accounting and finance, including at least three years leading a finance function.
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, management-reporting and cash-management capability.
- Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills, including experience maintaining detailed financial models.
- Strong experience with cloud-based accounting systems; QuickBooks experience is advantageous.
- Demonstrated practical experience using automation or AI to improve finance processes.
- The ability to translate complex financial information into clear commercial insights and recommendations.
- Strong leadership and stakeholder-management skills.
- A hands-on approach and willingness to work directly with reports, forecasts and underlying financial data.
- A collaborative and pragmatic style, with the confidence to constructively challenge the CEO and other leaders using sound analysis and evidence, and the openness to consider different perspectives.
Previous CFO experience is preferred but not essential. We will also consider an accomplished Financial Controller or Head of Finance who has already led a finance function and operated as a senior commercial adviser.
Experience in a multi-site, service-based business is preferred. Experience supporting M&A; is advantageous but not required.
Applicants must have existing unrestricted Australian working rights. The successful candidate will also be required to obtain and maintain a valid NSW Working with Children Check and complete a satisfactory National Police Check.
Working arrangements
- Permanent part-time, three days per week, entirely from our Bella Vista office.
- There is flexibility in selecting the three working days. Typical hours will be approximately 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, with reasonable flexibility by agreement.
- The advertised base salary of $140,000–$170,000 plus superannuation is the actual annual salary for the three-day working arrangement, not a full-time-equivalent figure. The final offer will reflect the successful candidate’s experience and capability.
- The position will commence by mutual agreement.
