The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Special Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel – Major Projects (title dependent on experience) to join our Hobart-based team. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert in-house legal advice across the full lifecycle of TasPorts' major construction and infrastructure projects, including procurement, contract negotiation and management, project delivery, and close-out.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Hobart.

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, you will be a trusted legal advisor to the Major Projects team, providing strategic, commercially pragmatic advice across the full project lifecycle and helping TasPorts manage construction, contractual and project delivery risk.

This is a diverse, hands-on role where you will:

- Provide specialist construction, infrastructure, procurement and commercial legal advice across the full lifecycle of major projects

- Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts and agreements

- Advise on governance, risk management and compliance matters

- Support the management of high-risk claims and disputes, including developing resolution strategies and managing external counsel and experts where required





- Develop and continuously improve construction contract templates, legal processes and training to strengthen project delivery capability

- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the business

About You

You are a commercially astute construction and infrastructure lawyer who combines solid technical expertise with practical in-house judgement and a collaborative, solutions-focused approach.

You will bring:

- Significant post-qualification experience (ideally 7+ years) in-house and/or in private practice, with substantial exposure to construction, infrastructure or major projects

- Demonstrated experience advising on complex construction contracts, procurement processes, project delivery risk and commercial negotiations

- Experience supporting projects through claims, variations and disputes

- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills

- The ability to balance legal risk with business objectives

- A proactive, pragmatic and solutions-focused mindset

Essential requirements

- Relevant tertiary qualification in Law

- Eligibility to hold a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of Tasmania

- Current Driver’s Licence

- Ability to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)

Desirable

- 7 + years’ post-qualification experience in-house and/or in private practice)., with substantial exposure to construction, infrastructure or major projects

- Demonstrated experience advising on construction and infrastructure projects,



commercial property developments and IT software procurements.

- Experience managing external construction counsel, technical experts and legal budgets

- Highly developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
