Finance Manager
CaseMeallin | Melbourne, VIC
Hands-on finance leadership | Modern reporting systems | Established professional services business
About CaseMeallin
CaseMeallin is a successful Australian project and development management consultancy with more than 30 years' experience. With offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Geelong, we provide independent project management and advisory services across a diverse range of sectors.
We are seeking an experienced Finance Manager who combines strong technical accounting expertise, commercial acumen and a hands-on approach to financial management.
About the Role
This is a wide-ranging and rewarding opportunity for a commercially minded finance professional who enjoys both the detail of day-to-day accounting and the broader responsibilities of financial management.
Working closely with senior management and our business support team, you will take ownership of the finance function, combining financial oversight, management reporting and strategic input with direct responsibility for a range of operational accounting activities.
Importantly, this is a genuinely hands-on management role. You will personally undertake day-to-day finance responsibilities as an integral part of your position, not simply oversee the work of others. You will also provide guidance and support to colleagues, ensuring the finance function operates efficiently and effectively.
Collaboration is central to how we work. We value people who share knowledge, support their colleagues, take ownership of their responsibilities and work together to achieve the best outcomes for the business.
We envisage this role commencing at four days per week, with the potential to transition to full-time employment.
Modern Financial Systems & Reporting
We operate within an integrated financial reporting environment incorporating Xero Syft consolidated reporting and Microsoft Power BI, with a growing emphasis on automation and reducing reliance on manual spreadsheets.
Our focus is on using these platforms effectively to consolidate financial and operational data, develop meaningful management reports and provide directors with clear, timely insights into business performance.
We are looking for someone who understands the value of well-designed reporting systems and can build on our existing capabilities, developing and refining reports that support informed commercial decisions.
Experience in financial data consolidation, reporting automation, dashboard development and translating complex financial information into clear, accessible management reports will be particularly valuable.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Compliance
- Take direct responsibility for a range of operational finance activities, while overseeing the broader finance function.
- Manage and actively contribute to payroll, PAYG, accounts payable, accounts receivable and monthly invoicing.
- Ensure accurate and timely reconciliations, financial transactions and statutory reporting obligations.
- Manage cash flow, debtor collections, staff reimbursements and financial controls.
- Maintain sound financial processes, controls and compliance across the business.
Financial Reporting & Commercial Management
- Take ownership of management reporting using Xero, Syft and Power BI, developing clear,
insightful reports and dashboards tailored to directors and senior management.
- Consolidate financial information across business entities to provide meaningful group-level reporting and analysis.
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting and ongoing financial planning.
- Analyse financial performance, identify trends and provide commercially relevant insights to support management decisions.
- Continually refine reporting structures, dashboards and processes to improve the quality, accessibility and usefulness of financial information.
Leadership, Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Provide practical guidance and support to colleagues involved in finance activities.
- Work collaboratively with directors, project managers and the broader business support team.
- Take initiative in identifying opportunities to improve financial systems, processes, controls and reporting.
- Lead the implementation of improvements, making effective use of technology and automation to enhance efficiency and productivity.
- Contribute to a positive, supportive and accountable team environment.
Essential Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must demonstrate the following:
1. Professional accounting qualification: Current CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ membership, or an equivalent recognised professional accounting designation.
2. Professional services experience: Previous experience in a finance management or senior accounting role within a professional services business, preferably consulting, engineering, architecture, project management or a similar fee-for-service environment.
3. Hands-on financial management: Demonstrated recent experience personally undertaking operational accounting activities alongside broader financial management responsibilities. You must be equally comfortable managing day-to-day finance activities and providing financial oversight and strategic input.
4. Financial reporting and data consolidation: Demonstrated experience consolidating financial data across multiple entities, systems or data sources, and developing meaningful management reports and dashboards. Experience with Syft, Power BI or comparable business intelligence and consolidated reporting platforms will be highly regarded.
5. Commercial and financial capability: Strong experience in management reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management and translating financial information into useful commercial insights.
6. Demonstrated initiative and continuous improvement: A proven track record of independently identifying opportunities for improvement and successfully implementing changes to financial systems, processes or reporting.
7. Team collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work constructively across teams, share knowledge, support colleagues and contribute to a cooperative working workplace.
8. Systems capability: Strong proficiency with Xero or comparable accounting platforms,
together with sound Excel skills and confidence working with modern financial reporting technologies.
What We're Looking For
Beyond technical competence, we're looking for someone who:
- Takes ownership, follows through and gets things done.
- Is equally comfortable undertaking day-to-day accounting activities and contributing to strategic financial decisions.
- Has strong analytical skills and can turn financial data into clear, meaningful information for directors.
- Understands how financial and operational data can be brought together to provide a more complete picture of business performance.
- Is proactive, resourceful and continually looks for better ways of working.
- Is comfortable rolling up their sleeves and working alongside colleagues.
- Communicates clearly and builds productive working relationships across the business.
- Enjoys contributing to a small, capable team where collaboration and mutual support are valued.
